My Favorite Buildings

My Favorite Buildings

Here's a rerun of a post Steel did two and a half years ago. A building with an already rich history back then, it has even more of a story to tell now. Fortunately, due to the hard work and foresight of a group of neighbors, preservationists, a great lawyer and a developer with the wherewithal and vision to turn an imminent demolition around, one of Steel's favorite buildings has a future too.

This marvelous edifice is on Jersey Street just west of Richmond. It is on a great block packed dense with architecture. It hardly requires any explanation as to why it would be a favorite. Even so, I am willing to bet many have never noticed it. I am guessing that it was built some time in the 1880's and was originally used as a livery stable. The wealthy residents of the neighborhood would have boarded their horses in this building. The terra cotta horse heads over the entry are frozen reminders of its interesting history. You can almost visualize the past when you are given such a strong reminder of how far we have come since this building was first erected. Today's use is much more mundane I am sure.

Its form is massive, looming over wooden houses that tightly surround it. The scene reminds me of the way medieval churches poke up out of their villages. It has wonderful brick and terra cotta detailing. Especially the pair of massive brick arches forming windows on the third floor that promise great views and a stunning interior space. I would love to see this building converted to condos. It could yield some of Buffalo's most unique and original residences.
