Freeing Up Buffalo's Waterfront

Freeing Up Buffalo's Waterfront

One of the best parts about the future transformation of the Coast Guard land to a public park is the layout of the land. If you look at the Erie Basin Marina from a bird's eye view, it is easy to see that the majority of property is dedicated to parking for boaters. There is a strip of grassy parkland that leads along the water, but other than that the Erie Basin Marina is dedicated to parking and roadways.

The current plan for the Coast Guard property looks very nice. The absence of auto traffic and car parking lots is quite noticeable. If you think about it, even LaSalle Park has a roadway that runs along the water's edge. Besides that future Sunset Promenade (near the Peace Bridge), this park, along with Squaw Island, is the perfect example of walking and biking waterfront destination. Along with Tifft Nature Preserve and Times Beach Preserve, this land will become a natural extension for anyone looking to take advantage of the Outer Harbor.
