Eric Starchild Keeps On Smiling

As much as some things in the city change, there are other things that remain constant. Eric Starchild is one of those 'constants' who has been drifting (and making a living) around the city for as far back as I can remember. When I first met Eric he was just a guy who enjoyed hanging around the vibe of Elmwood. Eventually he went from hanging around to selling crystals, which eventually led him to making jewelry. Now Eric spends a few hours each day preparing his wares before he hits the bustling commercial corridor. Earlier this afternoon I came across Eric and offered him a lift so we could catch up on his trade. He told me that he was happy with his pendant sales because they afforded him the chance to get his act together (at a time when he was down and out). He also clued me into a little secret that he believes helps him when presented with a customer. "I smile," he told me. "I keep very upbeat when I'm talking to someone who's interested in my jewelry. I remain positive and focused... when people see how excited I am they begin to look over what I'm offering."

I bet that there are few business owners on the street who are not familiar with Eric. I recall a few years ago when he headed off for Boston to try his luck in another city. It was a bit odd not to have him around at the time... there are a few characters around town who many of us could say that about. Some may say that Eric should pay his way when it comes to business. Like the street performers around the city, everyone has their stance as to whether this in unfair to the legitimate shopkeepers. To me, Eric adds an interesting element to the city and makes it a fun place to be around... same with the street performers. I would find it hard to imagine Elmwood without Eric Starchild... and I'm sure that he would find it hard to imagine life without Elmwood. It's good to know that the two have co-existed this long together.
