Drat That Rule #4

Drat That Rule #4

I was kind of caught off guard yesterday when I biked over the Whipple Truss Bridge and out onto the Central Wharf plaza. A security guard asked me to get off my bike and walk it. He said that there was no bike riding allowed on the bridge or on the boardwalk. I politely asked him about the rules and he pointed to a slip of paper attached to the entrance of the bridge. And there it was... rule #4 stated that bicycles must be walked.

Reading that fourth rule was kind of a bummer. For the last couple of weekends I have really enjoyed riding to the end of the boardwalk before turning around and heading home. I guess I could see a problem if there were noted instances where bikers were cited for causing trouble... though I can't imagine that is the case. I have seen many bike riders enjoying a casual ride over the bridge and out onto the boardwalk. Maybe the bridge is too narrow to accommodate pedestrians and bikers. That didn't appear to be a problem so far. Regardless, when I'm out for a ride I will probably not venture over the Whipple Truss Bridge any more. I find that walking a bike around is a nuisance when there are many other great places to ride to.
