There is now a Buffalo organization that exists solely to promote art murals in the city. That's very exciting, especially after personally discovering that a project of that magnitude is not only time consuming... it's also not cheap. Actually, we discovered last summer that identifying suitable walls can be fun (there are a lot of candidates), but where does the money come from to get the job done?
Members of the Buffalo Mural Arts Program, an organization being spearheaded by Council President David Franczyk's office, are planning an initial fundraiser to benefit the ongoing program. The event takes place on Thursday, April 10th, 2008 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at the Tudor Lounge. There will be live music and drink specials for those who show up to support the project. From what I understand, there will be ticket auctions (possibly for donated art) that will generate the funds needed to purchase the paint and pay the artists. The mural project is scheduled to kick off this spring... we'll keep you updated as to who, where and when. Organizers are looking for businesses and artists to donate a biddable prize to the cause. Please contact Kimberley Moore, BMAP Coordinator at buffalomuralarts@gmail.com for further details.
