GDC, I agree with your comments. When I lived in NYC, I also watched NYC-TV, the channel that includes a number of shows about NYC. Mayor Bloomberg helped to provide financing and the high-production values of the programs are evident. Now that I live in California, there are two shows on public television that spotlight California's public parks and other state sites of interest. They both have an effect on tourism.
To address the upstate/downstate divide in New York state, I think a similar public television program that covers various sites throughout the state would be beneficial to all residents. (New Yorkers should really get to know each other. When I lived in Buffalo I was surprised at the number of people who had never seen the actual Niagara Falls.) New Yorkers should be exposed to all the great places throughout the state and a television program would be a good start.
I give Ms. Smothers credit for trying to do something in a community about which she cares.
