great, that intersection is at the heart of that neighborhood and with such a huge elderly population around there already it makes sense to give them another option than a suburban nursing home when they can't afford to maintain their older home anymore. I look forward to seeing this building lit up and beautiful on my trips to the market.
Just when you think a neighborhood is on its last legs, news like this comes out. Great news for Broadway-Fillmore.
I hope these old folks have turbo and 9 mm automatic pistols on their wheelchairs. They'll need them if they decide to head out for some quality time in the hood.
Unless these seniors are involved in the drug trade, chances are they'll be just fine. Read the Buffalo News accounts of shootings, and you'll see an unusually high percentage of the victims have multiple convictions for drugs and violence themselves.
But aren't home invasions and robbery still a big problem in this city among senior citizens, particulary The East Side? I wouldn't want my grand-parents living in that area.
I'd think that someone would be far safer living in one of these apartments -- a densely-populated building with a single entrance and presumably some kind of security -- than in a private home on some half-deserted street.
Maybe senior housing was a safe bet for this project but you have to look past that and the area's riff raff and see the spreading footprint of revitalization sweeping through Broadway Fillmore in the future. It's great to see this building get redone and there's more to do so why be intimidated by some knuckleheads out on the street?
There already is a senior housing complex with an ample parking lot on Broadway at Memorial Drive. Its called "Francis(es)" something or other. (It once was a Burnham's department store). How well that is being administered and how tenant-safe that place is would be a barometer for senior housing at 937 Broadway. I don't know if heating is included in the rental price, but, when heating is included, will it mean the tenants have no say over the temperature settings? The Francis building features several 5,000 btu ACs hanging out the windows. Will 937 have central AC, also management controlled? The low rents suggest no tenant say so. Nine thirty seven is going to have a gated PARKING LOT! That would be the first gated anything on the east side besides the secure gates at Buffalo General!!!
Both the Francis building and 937 Broadway are NOT designed as substitutes for nursing homes!!! Those tenants can be as young as 50 who still are in the work-a-day cllass! Those tenants won't be loft-bound talking heads with no need to venture outdoors. The tenants will be leaving the building to get to jobs and shopping--will they be shopping and working at the Broadway Market?
Incidentally, across from the Francis building, at Broadway and Lathrop, is the most beautiful building in Buffalo. It's always a pleasure to see its clean symmetric flow..(I think the Chopin Singing Society once called it home.)
Then, also across from the Francis building on Memorial Drive is Gran Gran's. (It was once Munchies then Mr. Kones.) The kids in that neighborhood love Gran Gran's.
