Can't help but laugh at the Public Bridge Authority. Whoever is advising Ron Rienas and the board should be fired. They continue to make bad choices and get no where. They could have had the bridge built and the plaza half finished if they just went with a beautiful bridge.

We all know it was that ugly bridge that captured the attention of our community but after lifting the lid - all was exposed.

I vote that the Governor of NY and the Canadian Government dissolve the PBA and have the Niagara Bridge Commission manage all border crossings in WNY and Southern Ontario.

Why don't we waint until a new administration is in the white house and reneotionate with the canucks over shared border management?....thus limiting the size of the plaza and maybe saving a afew homes.

Or, the homes that are deemed to be historical, are salvageable and should be relocated to the connecticut ave area at the cost of the PBA. They would be doing a service to the community strengthening a neighborhood adjacent to their operation while getting more land for their operation.

    Or, both.

The new peace bridge should be built in the City. It should be built where the 190 and 290 meet. The road infrasture is already built. The City does not need nor should it have to expand it's roads --- besides ruining a beautiful neighborhood.

I remember the days when old Buffalo rolled over on every issue and complained about the consequences later. The new Buffalo has developed a spine and is passionate about the community. I'm glad to see this debate continue and am proud of my hometown. Congratulations!

Ever fly out of Toronto to the U.S. and go through U.S. Immigration before you board the plane?

Sames like there is not a problem with our Canadian allies fighting the War on Terror with us in Afghanistan..

I believe currently the policy between Canada and the U.S. at the borders is to ruturn wanted suspects to Canada or the U.S.A.

The U.S. has temped out warfare to Blackwater. It has sent prisoners to foreign detention centers for interrogation and you have a problem with Canada trying suspects of terrorism? Yet you have no problem with Canadian armed forces fighting in Afghanistan. It is not in the best interest of the Canadian government to allow terroridm or criminals to cross our borders because the U.S. is the country that imports most of it's products. The Canadian economy is tied to the U.S. and that is too important to both countries to be allowed to be destroyed by terrorists or criminals. Shared border inspections already take place between the U.S. and Canada at our aorports. Canada has been a long time friend and trading partner with the U.S.

Thank You BRO for not allowing this story to revolve around Shadow Governernment Peace Bridge Authority and Potentate Reinas.

Why doesn't the city buy each person whose house will be destroyed a new custom built home to their specifications? That way each family could get the house of their dreams and the city can get a strip mall or whatever they want.

    Point settled.

Shared Border Management could work any number of ways. The two most feasible would be to treat the US-bound plaza as sovereign US soil, just as they do embassies, or two simply pre-screen and pre-clear people on CDN soil by US personnel before they cross onto US soil. This is done at airports in Canada and the Caribbean for US-bound flights, and is done by France and England for the Chunnel. It's really neither unique nor difficult to implement.

If someone is a criminal, he could be turned over to CDN authorities. Otherwise, the point is to bar entry to those who are somehow not permitted entry.

The problem here has been the Bush Administration's intransigence on the question of shared border management no matter what option is explored, and also its insistence that anyone who changes their mind and does a U-turn be fingerprinted - an idiotic notion that is violative of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Peace Bridge expansion should be abandoned - no bridge should take 10+ years to build, unless it's made of gold and spanning miles' worth of water. The 190-290 split is a bad location because it would cause too many traffic hassles, given the presence there of the Grand Island Bridges and their tolls.

Instead, they should expand the crossing at Queenston-Lewiston, expand the plazas accordingly, and throw in a WNY tourism building, to boot.

Shared Boarder Management is a horrible idea. It will only lead to a jumbled mess of problems. I cannot understand why some dont see this. What would the US do with smugglers, terrorists or people wanted on warrents? Turn them over to the canadian authorities? The US would not have any legal stance while operating in a foreign country. Would you want the canadian government charging and trying a terroroist in a court of law?

This is Buffalo, one of the most backward, unprogressive cities in the country. We complain why this city continues to decay and decline. It is because of narrow-minded opposition to any proposed new development or proposed expansion of something existing. Front Park is underutilized and has outlived its usefulness to the community so there is no legitimate reason why we cannot permanently discard Front Park and use that prime property for something more economically beneficial. This whole Peace Bridge expansion fiasco has given our region an even more negative image. It just takes forever to get anything accomplished in this city. I agree with the idea of twinning the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. At least up in Lewiston, Niagara County the bridge can get expanded in far less time than here in rinky-dink, myopic Buffalo. We should also twin the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls as well. Both Lewiston and Niagara Falls need the investment and development so why not give them the opportunity to expand their area economy. Buffalo had its chance and obviously blew it.

The CBP Officers in Toronto operate only as preclearance to the US. CBP has no authority in those airports other than to issue I-94's to travelers. Anyone CBP discovers is wanted is turned over to Canadian Authorities. (The whole point of them being there is to prepare Officers in the US for those people of interest and also to expedite legitimate air travel) If this were to happen at the border this would create absolute chaos in terms of having to extradite criminals back to the US. The US already uses the method of barring people entry to the US and sending them back to canada but this can only be done if Canada admitted these people entry into their country. How could Canada return a wanted suspect to the US when there wouldnt be anyone in the US to return them to? There are too many legal obstacles to overcome (trade laws, criminal laws, and international laws) to make this happen and it would be detremental to the fight on terrorism, then there also is the problem of US weapons on Canadian soil. Canada'a immigration policy is vastly different to that of the US, and yes it is much easier to immigrate to canada than the US. The US needs to keep its Officers on US soil to adequatley accomplish their mission. "It is not in the best interest of the Canadian government to allow terroridm or criminals to cross our borders because the U.S. is the country that imports most of it's products"- criminals cross everyday, canada does not do outbouond inspections so they would never know what criminals are exiting their country. Please if your going to argue something dont be ignorant of laws and regulations of the US. Also it is not a strong arguement when you stae "I beleive."
