    Saltamonte’s Salsa is the best salsa I have ever had...make sure to try the atomic if you like it hot, and pick up some of his home made chips as well sine they are way better than any store bought brand.

    Ok, Boz, "artisanal breads" are small-batch produced specialty breads such as Sourdoughs, Farmhouse wheats, Ciabattas, Baguettes, Brioches, Ryes, etc.,that are prepared fresh with great skill. The secret to artisanal is the dough starter. A little dough is saved from every batch made to start the next. This passes the original yeasts along through countless "generations" of bread. Some artisanal bakers buy their starters from your boulangeries, and patisseries in the Old World. Those yeasts can date very far back in time. Artisanal is not factory mass-produced and frozen doughs baked in a supermarket. And it's not bakery fodder made without starter and only uses today's yeast. It's the highest form of bread making and well worth the extra dollar.

    Thanks for saving me some time, RD666. David's bread is some of the best- the kalamata olive is my favorite. Fredrico, the market is located in the basement of the church located on the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette.

    Your post also explained why I get annoyed when I see chains like Quiznos advertising sandwiches served on "artisan bread!"

    Yeah, the "artisanal" term is not trademarked, so scoundrels such as Quiznos can make their phony claims in their ads. Of course, Quiznos has troubles of their own: they required their franchisees to buy their ingredients exclusively through corporate-approved vendors which charged almost twice as much for their goods as un-approved vendors. Then on top of this crippling arrangement, franchisees are required to send Quiznos that steep monthly check. People were going broke and many of them sued. It's called kharma, baby.

    I had some of the bread for sandwiches a couple weeks ago. Yum yum.. One of the nicest aspects about living in Europe (germany) for a while was the amount and quality of the bakeries. While there are some breads in the supermarkets you really get some quality tasting bread that add to the meal more than a device to hold meat without getting your fingers dirty.

    I really love the dark, sweet and HEAVY breads, the kind of bread that isn't try but fills you up without having to eat 4 sandwiches of the white gummy crap we call bread. I agree that these kinds of breads are worth every penny!

    What I wish we could find more in the States are those big round boules of german black bread. A chunk of that with some chicken soup, and "Winter? What Winter?"

    Not to get away from the bread theme, but...we picked up some smoked Andouille sausage from Avenue Boys two weeks ago at the Wintermarket and used it in a big batch of seafood paella. Nuanced flavor of the sausages really made the dish. Highly recommended.

    The market has had a rather small attendance so far. Does it need to comply to "farmer's market" standards in order to be there or could the WInter market incorporate some other stuff, at least early on, to bring in more people? I'm thinking used books, a couple of small antique tables. I'm not advocating turning it into a flea market, but since fresh produce is not going to happen in February, filling that gap with something else to draw shoppers in might be an idea if properly managed.

    Have I missed Tea Amo? I've been to the market twice and they weren't there. Boo hoo for me.

    I highly recommend the MAP chili starter (superb! - never thought I needed chili started until now); Artful Table breads (the olive loaf is above compare); White Cow Dairy's yogurt and custard; Blossom Hill Farms' apples and fruit butters; Avenue Boys Smokehouse's Buffalo wing sausage and smoked Hungarian sausage; Go Veggies vegetable rolls; Chateau Bufaflo's Promendade hard cider; Carly's Crumbly Creations (snickerdoodle - OK, I tried all of her cookies and loved them); and Saltamonte's flavored chips (beyond addictive) and Texas caviar.

    Yes - I have eaten all of these products and loved them.
