Do you have a source for your information? I am needing to find out more about salt pigs for a PhD in ceramic history.

That salt pig is so cute I just might have to buy one!

Salt tip o' the day: salt and hot water are all that are needed to clean an iron skillet. Once a skillet is well-seasoned and oiled, you should avoid washing it with soap to maintain its cooking integrity.

Salt trivia: Did you know that the word "Salary" comes from salt? The Latin word "salarium" means "salt allowance" and Roman soldiers were supposedly given an allowance to buy salt as part of their income.

    Great item!

Fill that Salt Pig with the very best salt in the world- Celtic Sea Salt from the coast of Britanny. This salt has all its minerals in tack and isn't at all like the table salt or sodium chloride we've been fed here in the US ( which BTW is bleached and stripped of its minerals, having sugar added to it so it'll pour better...isn't that a testiment to why we have phobias about using salt in this country)

Celtic sea salt will bring out the natural flavors of any food and is a joy to cook with. Plus we need salt to live! Research it more on grain and salt's website. http://www.celticseasalt.com/

PS- You used to only be able to buy Celtic Gray Sea Salt through the "Grain and Salt Society" via mailorder. But rumor has it you'll be able to get it at the Lexington Co-op soon.

I have a collection of "salt mamas" that I got on a trip to Armenia. They are not unlike the salt pig featured in this story, except that they are in the shape of a person, with a big hole in the belly.
