Buffalo Premier of Gasland: The Movie
On Saturday, October 30, the Bulger Communication Center at Buffalo State College will be hosting the Buffalo premier of GASLAND, a film by Josh Fox.

The film, which won the Special Jury Prize for Best U.S. Documentary Feature at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, chronicles journey of filmmaker Fox as he uncovers the truth behind the natural gas-drilling industry and the new hydraulic fracturing drilling technology developed by Haliburton known as "fracking."  Fracking involves injecting millions of gallons of water, sand and proprietary chemicals under high pressure into a drilled

UB Going Green in a Big Way

The idea of sustainability has been discussed frequently within the last decade as people and industry have been making the move to reduce their carbon footprint and any negative effects on the environment. The University at Buffalo has been actively doing its part in reducing its footprint by using more efficient computer servers, reducing the consumption of paper products, and using solar power.

UB has decreased its footprint in relation to its website operations by purchasing wind energy certificates. The wind certificates offset the negative effects of energy consumption for the hosting

Bryant and Stratton Expanding Downtown

Ellicott Development's $7 million plan to restore the former Baker Shoes building at 456 Main Street is moving forward.  A mix of commercial and residential space is planned.  Bryant and Stratton College is leasing 18,000 sq.ft. of space in the first three floors of the building and will also take a portion of the former Courtyard Mall next door.  The college's downtown campus is located across Main Street in the Lafayette Court building. 

Sixteen apartments are planned on the upper floors of the 43,000 sq ft.

Chason Affinity Files Suit to Proceed with Collegiate Village Plans

Chason Affinity, developers of the "Collegiate Village" student housing complex, and Villa Maria College, today filed a lawsuit against the New York State Division of Human Rights and its Commissioner Galen D. Kirkland in Erie County Supreme Court.

The developers and the college seek to set aside a 2008 agreement they believe is not valid, and clear the way for a $25 million effort to renovate and preserve up to 276 units of market rate housing, and provide affordable rents to families in the Kensington-Eggert neighborhood.

UB 2020 Progress on South Campus

With the announcement of John B. Simpson's resignation as president of the University at Buffalo, there has been concern for what it means for the progress of UB 2020. Simpson declared that, "UB 2020 does not have an expiration date" which is evidenced in the completion of the "new" Child Care Center on UB's south campus.  It is part of "Phase II" of south campus improvements under the UB 2020 umbrella.

Harvie to Speak at Canisius
Unity, the gay-straight alliance of Canisius College, will welcome Ian Harvie to campus on November 2, 2010. Harvie, who underwent a female to male transformation, is an actor and comedian who will discuss his experience as a transgender man, as well as his role in the LGBT community. For the first time in the history of this Catholic institution, Canisius will prove yet again to be a progressive, tolerant and accepting place of higher learning for students in the Western New York area.

Lofts at 136 Opens to 2/3 Occupancy

With three successful downtown projects under his belt, developer and architect Jake Schneider can add another to his list, the Lofts at 136. Schneider acquired the building in May 2009 that sat abandoned since 2001. The building is located on the corner of N. Division and Elm Streets and originally served as a paper warehouse to the firm of Alling and Cory, built in 1910. For its 100 year anniversary the building now serves a new purpose for students desiring downtown living.

Embracing Chinese Culture
On October 1, the University at Buffalo Confucius Institute will be a hosting a free gala at the Flickinger Performing Arts Center at Nichols School in observance of the Chinese Moon Festival.

UB has partnered up with the Chinese Club of Western New York and the Nichols School to present this lively celebration of Chinese culture.  The Moon Festival has been celebrated in China and several other Asian countries for over 3,000 years to rejoice in the conclusion of the harvest season.  Traditionally,

Work Starting on New Educational Opportunity Center

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), the University at Buffalo's foremost facility for training urban community members for jobs and preparing them for higher education, will break ground for its new $46 million home in downtown Buffalo at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon.  It is being constructed on a surface parking lot fronting Ellicott Street near the corner of Goodell.

UB Plans Restoration Work for Hayes and Crosby Halls

The University at Buffalo has announced a restoration and renewal project for the School of Architecture and Planning on the university's South Campus.  The school is housed in Hayes Hall and Crosby Hall -- two of the most historic structures and iconic buildings at UB. Through the utilization of New York State critical maintenance funds, this $50 million project will preserve the historic exteriors of the buildings while creating academic spaces befitting a 21st century school of architecture and planning.

Construction Watch: Buff State’s New Dorm Complex

Buffalo State College's student housing project is looking rather green these days.  The $48 million dorm complex is quickly taking shape in the southwest side of the campus at the corner of Grant Street and Rockwell Road.  Cannon Design is the architect.

The new 507-bed apartment-style dormitory will feature 124 four-bed units, each with private bedrooms, two full baths and a kitchen.

Construction Watch: Kaleida Health/UB Project Tops Off

Officials from Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo were on hand to witness the last sequence of steel erected at the construction site of a new combined $291 million clinical care, research and business incubation building on the Medical Campus.  The $291 million structure is taking shape next to Buffalo General Hospital at Goodrich and Ellicott streets. 

Kaleida Health President and CEO James R. Kaskie and UB President John B. Simpson signed their names to the last section of steel at a “topping off” ceremony.  Kaskie and Simpson’s names join

What is ECC Thinking?

While the University at Buffalo's academic health programs are heading downtown over time, Erie Community College is going in the opposite direction.  The college is proposing to build a $30 million health science building at the North Campus in Amherst.

Construction Watch: Lofts at 136
The exterior changes to the former Alling & Cory warehouse on Elm at North Division Street may be subtle, but they are nonetheless striking.  The six-story, National Register building is being converted into 88 units of student housing dubbed Lofts at 136.  It is scheduled to open for the fall semester.

Construction Watch: UB’s Kapoor Hall

The former Acheson Hall on UB's South Campus has been stripped down.  The 147,000-square-foot structure, vacant since 1994, is the future home of the School of Pharmacy.  Kapoor Hall will be the first facility designed specifically for the needs and anticipated growth of UB Pharmacy, which is ranked in the top 25 pharmacy schools in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Lofts @ 136: Model Unit Revealed
As construction continues on the redevelopment of the historic Alling and Cory paper warehouse into an 88-unit student loft complex, the building's model unit is ready for viewing. Located at the corner of N. Division and Elm streets downtown, Lofts @ 136 is on schedule for a fall opening.
