Olmsted Conservancy Attorney Fires Back at PBA DEIS

Elena Cala Buscarino

In an 8-page response of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy regarding the Peace Bridge Expansion Project- Section 106 - Adverse Effect Finding, Olmsted attorney Arthur J. Giacalone has told the Public Bridge Authority that they haven't done a good job of the draft of their Environmental Impact Study (DEIS). The crux of the response according to Olmsted Conservancy President and CEO Thomas Herrera-Mishler is that the PBA DEIS doesn't take into account the original vision of the Olmsted-designed Front Park, its environment and its importance to the community at large.

"It's our job to protect this Olmsted park that was put there primarily for its view," stated Herrera-Mishler. "The PBA has left itself open to review and second-guessing in the amateur way they've gone about this--their 'get it done' and 'good is good enough' attitude."

Lafayette Rink Gets Improvement Dollars

buffalorising

The City's Lafayette Ice Rink on Tacoma Avenue will be getting nearly $200,000 in city-funded capital improvements according to a statement by Mayor Byron W. Brown.

The money will go toward the first significant infrastructure improvements to the sports facility since it was opened in 1989. In accordance with the mayor's 2009 Capital Budget recommendations to the Common Council, improvements would include $168,000 for the installation of new ice rink dasher boards and protective glass in the Lafayette Rink.

Earlier this year, the Mayor announced that the city would provide $20,000 in capital funds for the construction of a new Zamboni cement pad and drainage system, which ensured that no dirt would be tracked onto the rink’s ice surface that typically caused delays in rink cleaning and ice time for hockey teams renting the rink.

“These capital budget funds – both the…

Winter Means Skating - Learn How With PAL

buffalorising

Though it’s always hockey season here in Buffalo, winter brings an added glee to the sport – it’s the season the sport was created in. Since the sport was created in the cold of winter, it seems it gains a bit more attention when the temperature begins to drop. Not only does hockey take an added shine, but ice skating in general gets a peak in interest. People want to take their sweetheart to the rink – indoor or outdoor – have those time honored smiles and laughs as they grip each others arms and both tumble onto their rumps and then head for hot cocoa. It is the perfect time of year to offer a chance to learn how to skate.

The Police Athletic League (PAL) of Buffalo figured that out and are partnering with a couple of community agencies to bring Learn to Skate programs to Bud Bakewell Rink in Riverside Park and the Timothy J. Burvid Rink in Cazenovia Park. At the Bak…

December 1 as World AIDS Day

December 1 as World AIDS Day

John Carocci

In 1988 a global summit of health officials designated December 1 as World AIDS Day, a day to focus international attention on the pandemic and remember those lost to the disease. December 1, 2008 will mark the 20th observance of World AIDS Day, and despite increased public awareness and advances in prevention and treatment, AIDS continues to be one of the most destructive epidemics in history.

AIDS Community Services of Western New York is planning a day-long program of events for World AIDS Day, including a display of nearly 100 fabric memorial panels which make up the Mending of the Hearts project. The ACS front lawn will also be blanketed by 452 red ribbons, one for each client lost to AIDS since the agency was established in 1983. For a complete schedule of World AIDS Day events, please send email here. For more informat…
