No golf... no convertibles... It's January in Buffalo

This week started off like any other week in January... sort of. There was a film crew from Toronto shooting a 20-minute short at Lu Modern Classics on Elmwood. The crew was also roaming Main Street in search of city sets, and they even made their way to the DL&W Terminal on the Buffalo River. Then there were the constant sightings of the TV crew from NY who are still in town shooting a reality dating show. That posse set up shop at Off the Wall, and after talking to one of the crewmembers (John... who had found his way to The Chocolate Bar), it appears as if the production crew has been digging Buffalo - in particular the food, the locales and the people. Then the cameras were out rolling again last night at La Luna where lenses were trained on a fashion shoot choreographed by Heather Russell. And that's not to mention the fashion (and chocolate) show that was hosted by Shadow Lounge on Hertel.
The above post is in direct response to 'Bacon', who recently left the following comment on BRO:

So tell me, Buffalonians. Why does anyone live up there? I spent 30 years in the north and these pics remind me why we moved. My wife is from Buff. When we see stuff like this we just laugh. We have been in the south for over 10 years and can think of no reason to go back. Don't tell me you love the 'change of seasons'. Because the leaves changing here are just as beautiful and I can still put the top down on my convertible on my way to the golf course in January.

QE,
Nice post.
In response to Bacons earlier post, I have no problem with people like he and his wife moving and staying away.
Maybe we should start referring to lossing people like that as "just trimming the fat".
That type of population loss is no problem for me ;-)

Prashant...you're the best! Czech you and me dinner sometime, soon...
why do i stay in buffalo?...well, i could write a book on this topic but in short, for what its worth, buffalo has more history, heritage, culture and character than most places in the country. it sure beats the suburban wastelands of strip malls, chain restaurants and parking lots of the south, not to mention, southerners and people like bacon just annoy the hell out of me.
i lived in raleigh for 5 months and now i can honestly say that despise that place and will never consider moving down south again.
good riddance 'bacon' please...dont come back
Bacon sounds like he is trying very hard to convince himself he made the right move. Seems like deep down he knows he didn't
Perhaps Bacon's wife had to move to escape the constant criticism she no doubt gets after marrying him.
Old joke time... The movement of people from the north to the south raises the IQ's in both directions.
Is losing a golfer with a convertible a loss?
Enjoy your January golf, I will enjoy my January skiing. or snowball fights with the kids down the street. Sorry you wont be able to do those things. We can still play golf, but we also have the benefits of winter. And unlike what the media's popular perception most people actually like the snow. *gasp*
Winters are also good for the body as well, I was just reading a couple studies done about obesity and health in NewScientist magazine (A science journal based out of London). They studied various demographic populations around the continental US and even if you are Rich or Poor.
"poor white people living in the northern plains are similar to those in the Mississippi valley and Appalachia by these measures, yet tend to live longer."
or
"2 Climate control
We humans, like all warm-blooded animals, can keep our core body temperatures pretty much constant regardless of what's going on in the world around us. We do this by altering our metabolic rate, shivering or sweating. Keeping warm and staying cool take energy unless we are in the "thermoneutral zone" - around 27 °C for a naked body - which is increasingly where we choose to live and work.
There's no denying that ambient temperatures have changed in the past few decades. Between 1970 and 2000, the average British home warmed from a chilly 13 °C to 18 °C. In the US, the changes have been at the other end of the thermometer as the proportion of homes with air conditioning rose from 23 to 47 per cent between 1978 and 1997. In the southern states - where obesity rates tend to be highest - the number of houses with air con has shot up to 70 per cent from 37 per cent in 1978.
Could air conditioning in summer and heating in winter really make a difference to our weight? Sadly, there is some evidence that it does - at least with regard to heating. Studies of people enclosed in respiration chambers for a few days show that in comfortable temperatures we use less energy. In one study of women exposed to 27 °C versus 22 °C, it amounted to a difference of about a megajoule (239 kilocalories) a day. That's the amount of energy in 27 grams of body fat.
Sweating burns up energy, however, and there's good evidence that high temperatures reduce the amount people eat, according to biostatistician David Allison of the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Whether these factors significantly alter energy balance is not clear, but it's got to be worth investigating."
Have fun in the south guys! I'll stay right. (sorry for the length)
When I moved away from Buffalo....I had to strongly convince myself everyday that I made the right choice....that was until I finally admitted to myself that I made the wrong choice and moved back!
Cool pics, but one of the worst posts I've ever seen on here.
Equally pointless as Bacon's comment.
Bacon basically said there are no good reasons to live here, which of course is ridiculous, and this reply says that thumbs up from a visiting big city movie crew and TV crew are proof that this is a good place to live.
Great, we can add these crews to the "LA investors" on our list of recent glamorous visitors who I'm sure in the few days they spent there developed *great* insights into real Buffalo life.
~~~rolls eyes~~~
Visitors anywhere will often say nice things to their hosts, usually some mix of sincerity and politeness. News of such visits can be interesting, but why so much need for fawning and exaggerating into empty self justifications?
Reminds me of the spot-on comment last week about Buffalo lately being the scary desperate girl (or boy) longing for any scraps of attention and approval we can find.
boy I wish I lived down where Bacon lives...Papa John's delivered after an awesome happy hour at Carrabbas.....nothing like it.
good thing bacon is gone. ridding negativity makes our community even stronger.
pssssssst… (it's February)
pssst.... (the beginning of the week was January)
Shoot, I really must have struck a nerve with that one. This is the second or third time someone else has brought it up.
See, Mom, I told you I could do something with my English degree besides teaching!
when I lived in the Buffalo area, going to college, I couldn't wait to leave and see what else was out there. now that I have, I can't wait to come back! you get a different perspective on things once you leave an area, and you really understand what makes buffalo so special.
I wonder why bacon visits a site that is all about the re-emergence of a city he could care less about?
Damn I missed the hot women in the window of la luna.
I've been in California 13 years and would easily move back to Buffalo and probably will some day. I didn't escape Buffalo by leaving- just went to see some other things. If Bacon likes the south, fine. You can find good things about any place. I'll take a Buffalo summer over most of what the south gets any day. Something tells me Bacon misses Buffalo more than he lets on, otherwise, why would he be on boards like this?
stephenjames716 - Excellent comment! I feel the same way.
Also, please remember there's more to the South than Atlanta and Charlotte. People the world over find places like Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina beautiful and historic.
If Bacon hates Buffalo, then he did the best thing, which was to leave.
I find it amusing the number of people that post on here and claim to dislike Buffalo. Now I don't know about the rest of you but if I disliked or hated a city, the last thing I'd be doing is checking out a website about it AND taking the time to post. Bottom line is that people who move away have to try and justify it within themselves and that usually means bashing Buffalo. We all know you people love Buffalo deep down, your not fooling anyone!
You nevet told us what that crew was filming in Lu. A commercial? A senior thesis for film school?
Oh, come on now, everyone. You can love and have lifelong and keen interest in countless places that you have never lived in but know; lived in, but left; would like to live in, but can't. Buffalo has been one of my favorite cities since a childhood of a half-century ago, living with grandparents on Lafayette. EVERYTHING that happens in Buffalo is of deep concern to me, just as everything that happens in New York (where I grew up) and Washington and Baltimore (cities I know and love) is. Some of the most passionate contributors to this site do not live in Buffalo, and may not ever again (no names necessary, but we have come to know who they are). So what? Do you need a special blood test to be able to offer a comment or to have an opinion? Buffalo can well learn from other people and other places.
One could also ask why Buffalo boosters get so defensive about other's negative comments about your city. If you're so confident in Buffalo's greatness, why are you bothered by what others think? And why is it okay for you to claim Buffalo superiority and disparage other cities and regions, but not okay for others to do so regarding Buffalo? This post and many of the comments make Buffalo look rather small.
to each: I wasn't claiming any superiority, just questioning what someone is doing on a site all about buffalo if they aren't all about it themselves.
I think that Sally and Mike are on to something........and Malooga's comment made me laugh out loud. - Delicously rude !
sorry grammar cops, that was supposed to be "deliciously".........I've had only 3 cups of coffee so far.
