Snow Storm: A Gord's Eye View
Ever want to know what it looks like when a snowstorm rolls into town? Traffic Reporter Air Gordon (WBEN, Star 102.5) sees it all the time from the weather copter. "It's fascinating," he relayed to me. "The snow looks like something from The Poseidon Adventure. There is a virtual wall of snow... one minute it's clear, and the next it looks like a big wave is about to engulf the city."
Even though these photos look menacing, the storm that actually rolled in when these shots were captured was not very significant. They were taken a couple of weeks after the 'October Surprise'... just a typical lake effect snowstorm dropping some white stuff on the city. "I thought that BRO readers would like to see what it looks like from the air," Gordon said. That's true... we know what it looks like from the ground, so why not get a different perspective?

This actually reminds me of a Bills game (home vs Miami) that I went to back in 2003. The snow wall sat over half the stadium and I got to watch it roll in over the entire crowd. It was awesome. The dolphins just quit.
Reminds me of working at the City Court Building. We were on the sixth floor and our window faced the water. I vividly remember how I said the front that we saw coming at us from across the water was to be taken seriously, then the snow came and I said it again, but was told that we get snow all the time and this was no different. Of course, the date was October 12, 2006, you know the drill...

I am out raged that the voting public lets this kind of thing continue, this is just as bad at those delinquent home onwers like that guy on Pennsylvania Ave. Vote for me to be president and I will make sure this kind of thing stops, I beleive Sam Hoyt voted in favor of this particular snow storm and the subsequent taxes to pay for the clean up.

Brian Higgins and snowstorms are the only two things that have made their mark on the waterfront in 30 years. I give him credit foor making things happen in WNY.

Yeah - look what Brian Higgins has done for the waterfront - I am not sure if you can make it out in the picture, but he got a beach created next to a sewage treatment plant, so it it is closed more days than it is open. Oh yeah, then after he left state government (Which charges us too much for power and for tolls) he got in front of the cameras to take credit for change. And then, to make matters worse, instead of using his clout to lower the electricity rates around here, he insures that the rates will go even higher, by helping brojker a deal that will increase our rates to pay for more government boondoggles. Give me a break!

First of all...N.W. Farnsworth...I believe the pictures were taken by Air Gordan, as indicated in the article.
Secondly....Dan...the beach you are referring to is Woodlawn Beach...which is a state beach & has been a state beach since before all of us were born. The area that Brian Higgins was instrumental in developing is Gallagher Beach, which is near the Small Boat Harbor....there are several miles distance between them!

So tell me, Buffalonians. Why does anyone live up there? I spent 30 years in the north and these pics remind me why we moved. My wife is from Buff. When we see stuff like this we just laugh. We have been in the south for over 10 years and can think of no reason to go back.
Don't tell me you love the 'change of seasons'. Because the leaves changing here are just as beautiful and I can still put the top down on my convertible on my way to the golf course in January.
I think they're great pictures. I remain to be convinced that there's a god, though.

I love the snow, and I'm not the only one. Sledding, skiing, making a snowman, the quiet of an evening snowfall - don't slag us off just because you can't be bothered.

Humidity (due to Great Lakes) and mosquitos are much worse in Buffalo. I can still visit snow, but don't have to shovel it daily. Ya'll seem a little sensitive. Cabin fever setting in?

All Y'alls got more snow on the ground in the south than most of us have up here in Buffalo. What's up wit dat, huh? How the red ants and cockroaches makin' out wit the snow down there? Whatcha' all do wit the homeless and illegals that you got livin' everywhere like rats? Just wonderin' 'cause it's beautiful up here this time of year. Y'all should come up and visit sometime, maybe in July or August when it ts too hot to do anything but sit around in your draws drinkin' lemonaide. We all know whatcha'alls are up to. Uh yuh!
Buffalw is really beautiful. I have never seen it from the sky view. Only from the tanawana view years and years ago.

As global warming continues and global temperatures rise, it makes me smile knowing that the south will probably burn up and die first.

What an amazing site! I grew up in Buffalo, and just moved to SC last November, and seeing this makes me miss it a little...I never thought I would say that! We did have a little taste of snow yesterday, but it's already gone.

Do you live in Central Florida by chance...even though my job moved me from Buffalo 2 years ago...I miss it...maybe not trudging through the snow...but at least Buffalonians know their home will still be standing after the snow melts...unlike in Floriday during Hurricane season you have no idea if yours will still be standing...or even when their is a fluke of a Tornado. You are probably the type of Buffalonian we are happy to get rid of .

Yeah, another lake effect happening NOW! True Buffalonians get excited about lake effect, especially if it hits on a Sunday evening, early Monday morning - then even the adults get a snow day. All we have to do during snow days is maybe shovel, help our older neighbors with shoveling, and then kick back with a bottle of wine and play a few board games. Gotta love that lake effect, especially when it hits "on time."

This is one of the most amazing weather photos I have ever seen. It is an excellent example of the northern edge of a lake effect snow band. If you do not live here in WNY, you have no idea how localized these weather events are. Often, we can literally draw a line across a street to divide clear weather from a raging snow storm. Though we have a great number of weather photos of these events from the ground, the view from the air offers a unique and spectacular view of the type of interesting weather we have here in WNY.
For us weather people, WNY is indeed a natural laboratory to study these small scale weather features. The best part about our weather extremes is that they rarely will lead to the direct loss of life that other parts of the country see. Snow is snow, you shovel it, you hibernate until it clears up and you go on with your daily chores, most times with little or no consequence. For weather savvy WNYers, the four seasons are what make life so interesting here. Air Gordon, the photo is fantastic, I encourage you to continue to provide your unique view of our city in future photos!!
wow that is really awesome to see what people in the sky see a snow storm and pictures like that should be sent to other states that never see snow ever. then maybe they will understand the true meaning of snow in buffalo, people in other states think were pulling a fast one on them but it's buffalo what more can we expect .
