What's in a name? You tell us!

When Anna Miller called Rocco Termini the other day to inquire about his business incubator at the Ellicott Commons space, she asked him what it was to be called. Rocco replied that he was not sure, but that he would think about it and get back to her. The 'mini-department store' (as per Sally) that would soon house commercial start-ups was nameless, and as we all know, a name is vitally important. Of course there will be other businesses inside, and each of those businesses will have branded identities, so what kind of name would be appropriate for branding the entire enterprise?
Rocco called a few minutes ago and wondered if Buffalo Rising viewers would want to try their hands at the name game. He thought that a collective of people who know Buffalo, and care about Buffalo, would have some great suggestions. He has even offered to give the winner a $200 gift certificate (good for any store within the collective) if he ends up using that viewers' suggestion. And how cool would it be to be able to say that you named a 'mini-department store' in Buffalo? So if you have a suggestion that you would like to pass along, Rocco is reading... and looking for THE new name for his latest project.
I thought "Ellicott Commons" was a pretty good name already! It is on Ellicott (as is the confusingly named Washington Market), it's the name of the man who designed Buffalo's radial street plan (may it one day be better intact) AND… it's a common space shared by multiple vendors! Sounds perfect!
Ellicott Street Collaborative
or ElCo (or some play on ElCo because it sounds so similar to the Larkan's L CO)
I like this because it ties in the location, it's not over thought, and being that this mini dept store could house several different types of retail, the title shouldn't get too specific.
or Ellicott Street Collection, Ellicott Collection
How about "The Hatchery"?
Ellicott Emporium
Shops on Market Square
View of the Market
Market Commons. like Market Arcade? no?
Flower City Commons... it harkens back to the flower district and brands it a new neighborhood. Maybe Flower Village Commons?
Sally's
In honor of you know who.
I like a straight-forward name that clearly states what it, in fact, is. Thus, my submission is:
The Shops on Ellicott
No more submissions. Edward Street wins. :)
Rocco,
I think the name should represent the fact that several businesses will be under one roof with their own unique products/services. How about "Collectively Authentic"?...together but very different.
Just imagine saying, "I'm heading over to Collectively Authentic to do some shopping." The name alone implies one-stop-shopping without the suburban feel.
Ellicott venue's
Rocco Shoppo
But seriously, I think Flower City Commons is a good one. It would be a start to rebranding the area with it's proper historical name.
Naming it a collective will scare away certain shoppers who will think it is run by communists and/or young people, but most folks are used to seeing "Commons" around by now.
How about "The Hatchery"?
"The Ellicott Terminal" - get it? Keeps te Ellicott theme going and also recognizes the founder (sort of - but with a twist that prevents egos from glaring through).
"The Ellicott Terminal" - get it? Keeps the Ellicott theme going and also recognizes the founder (sort of - but with a twist that prevents egos from glaring through).
Or, try this one - "The Branding Iron"
I don't like Flower City anything. Isn't Rochester known as the Flower City? I wouldn't mind something like Queen City Collective, Queen City Commons, or Queen City Market.
Why do people sometimes use "Nickel City" in reference to Buffalo? Also, I've heard that other Great-Lakes cities have been called the Queen City, or the Queen City of the Lakes.
Great Lakes Trading Co.
Great Lakes Trading Co.
Great Lakes Collective
Great Lakes Mall
I like "business incubator" just fine. Spend your time reconsidering those vinyl-ish cornices.
Marketing research shows that Americans like logos and labels with animals on them. We buy things with cartoons pictures. For example, most of the top selling wines in the US have an animal on the bottle, like Yellow Tail (kangaroo), Ravenswood (bird), or Monkey Bay (obvious). You just slap on a fish, dog, monkey, or kangaroo, and your chances at success improve dramatically. We buy disability insurance from ducks (AFlac), prescription medication from beavers, and automobile insurance from geckos. I don't know; it must be a sign of our superior intelect. Anyway, that's why I would suggest any one of the following names:
Underdog Shops (You could have a dog on the sign and advertisements.)
LeapFrog Collective (It suggests quick movement and energy)
Stray Cat Alley (Sounds sort of gritty but adorable at the same time, much like the City of Buffalo itself.)
...or anything with the word "Platypus" in it. They're cute, and it's fun to say.
Oh yeah, incubator could go in the title, along with the animal theme. It suggests little baby chicks, and who doesn't love those?
I think the "Nickel City" name came from the time when there was the Buffalo Nickel in production around the US.
Buffalo is the original Queen City of the Lakes, if someone else is using it then they are probably copy cats. That name for Buffalo has been around for at least 100 years now.
The most prominent piece of history in that area was the Washington Market (why the current Washington Market has its name)

Hmm as for my submissions are, in no particular order:
1. Buffalo Bazaar,
2. Distinctly Downtown,
3. The Downtown (Commerce) Collective
Fred: "Nickel City" came from the earlier nickels with the indian on the front and the Bison on the back.
Image Consultant -
All of those names sound like tacky McMall destinations. Not appropriate for a major downtown project.
I guess stick with Ellicot Commons.
I like Ellicott Commons
"THE BRAIN TRAIN" "THE BRAIN TERRAIN" "THE BRAIN DOMAIN" something to laugh in the face of the often mentioned "brain drain"
The Shops at the Commons
Ellicott Court
Commons Hall
The Commons
more than anything, i think this really points out the value of buffalo rising. to suggest that rocco termini gives a shit what BR readers/responders think, let alone actually reads our rants, surely says something about BR and rocco.
"Shopkeepers Downtown Bizarre" or "Buffalo Shopkeepers & Traders"

I hope most of you do not own your own businesses or are in the business of marketing. Some of these names are just hideous. I I would like to believe that some of those names are a joke.
It is already called Ellicott Commons, leave it alone.
i say you partner up with Canisius or UB and ask them to build a sattelite business incubator located in downtown Buffalo. Partnering up with either of their "entrepreneurship" programs makes more sense to me. Some names would be
Buffalo Innovations, UB's Business incubator, Canisius' Business Incubator, incubator 475, Braintree, BizHub
In my opinion (which often flies in the face of popular opinion !), the word "commons" is overused, misused and cliche. It's original and, until recent times, meaning was a village green open to all residents for grazing sheep. (e.g. The Boston Commons). The only other use I can think of is the legislative body representing people who are not of noble birth: The House of Commons.
BELLICOTT ROW
Belle, for beautiful.
Ellicott, an obvious tribute to Joseph.
Row, to describe the urban character of this wonderful block.
The Terminus or Terminus E
The final point.
An end point on a transportation line or the town in which it is located.
A place of completion.
The Queen City Terminus
The Ellicott Shops

But this project does have some resemblance to the Ithaca Commons, which is a several block pedestrian mall lined with shops and restaurants in which anchors Ithaca's downtown.

- a nice reminder of what use to be, and what this new space is trying to do!
My vote goes for Plata-ma-pus.
You could play off the flower district neighbors with a bent toward incubating new business:
Seedlings -- A Collective Market
...or just play off its location in the Ellicott Commons:
"The Common Market" or "The Common MarketPlace"
Before we officially adopted "Buffalo" for our city, based on the names the former Native Americans called this due to our then majestic river, i'd suggest New Amsterdam Trading Post. The architecture is very Euro, and since many places in New England are already represenative of this, why not give a fresh building a historic marker.
Image Consultant has some very good suggestions. Would the Crocodile be popular if there wasn't a Croc neon sign out front? Animals somehow appeal. And Stray Cat Alley is kind of perfect (or.... purrfect) because there is an alley in Rocco's new project, an ingenious one in fact, with St. Michael's as a terminating vista at one end. Animals are hip. Shopping downtown is hip. It all goes together.
But please, pretty please, no Shops at Ellicott Street. I grow tired of seeing this cliche in cities I visit. It was cute in elitist Beverly Hills, but we're a bit more rustic, aren't we?
I like the concept of a Bizaar.
How about BizR?
Rocco likes names like "Is" and "The", which was his proposed name for AM&A's if he'd taken that on. BizR has a similar theme. Or BzR.
