City officials and project partners celebrated the completion of the first fifteen homes at Sycamore Village yesterday. Work started on the project at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Sycamore Street one year ago. When complete, the development will include 20 market rate homes and four low to moderate-income units, many built along a new street, Sydni Lane, and fronting a landscaped common area.

In 1988 a global summit of health officials designated December 1 as World AIDS Day, a day to focus international attention on the pandemic and remember those lost to the disease. December 1, 2008 will mark the 20th observance of World AIDS Day, and despite increased public awareness and advances in prevention and treatment, AIDS continues to be one of the most destructive epidemics in history.
AIDS Community Services of Western New York is planning a day-long program of events for World AIDS Day, including a display of nearly 100 fabric memorial panels which make up the Mending of the Hearts project. The ACS front lawn will also be blanketed by 452 red ribbons, one for each client lost to AIDS since the agency was established in 1983. For a complete schedule of World AIDS Day events, please send email here. For more informat…

Holiday spending might be a bit tougher this year, so you better make sure that the gifts are a bit more meaningful. What could be more meaningful that a signed book about Buffalo to give to loved ones who are living out of town at the moment? Or maybe someone has just moved back and is hoping to become more familiar with the area. Even better, why not give a signed Buffalo book to someone who has been talking about moving back. Give them the push that they need... give them one of the many books that will be available at the Historical Society on Saturday, November 29th (noon to 2pm).
Along with the titles, 25 local authors will be on hand to sign the covers. It's your chance to talk to the authors and ask questions about their writing styles or the content that they chose. The following authors and titles will be featured: …

When you think of the holidays, do you think of gingerbread houses? If you don't maybe it's because you never experienced the professionally-made houses featured each year at the historic Gilda's Club mansion on Delaware Avenue. It's a wonderful chance to dive into the holiday season and support a worthy cause at the same time. Here's Christa's take on the event from last season:
For any home cook that likes to make the simplest of candies or decorate cakes, Gilda's Club of WNY will be hosting its 5th annual holiday event which combines the display of compelling gingerbread houses along with the opportunity to purchase fine handcrafted items from local artists.
Gingerbread, Gifts and Glitz is truly a joy. It is a real treat to tour the beautiful interior of Gilda's House, while perusing the fant…

The only way to spread the word about Buffalo is to share with others through some form of media the positive sides of the city. Everyone knows that’s what Buffalo Rising attempts to accomplish, but it seems every time the city is mentioned in a newspaper it is invariably about something negative – for example, here’s their favorite: snow. Though it may take awhile to make some headway with the papers, at least we can say we definitely have books on our side. Buffalo Heritage is a printing company whose mission is to promote Buffalo’s rich history.
Started in 2006, the company has become the proud printer of a number of books that showcase what the community that remained in Buffalo has to offer. They publish GardenWalk, Postcard Views, and PEACEPRINTS as well as a number of other books. Most recently, they are publishing “The Fine Art of Capturing Buffalo,” by Mark …

Over the last few years I've waited until the last minute to figure out what to do for New Years. This year might be the same. It's rare that I hear about anything going on this early in the game, so I figured that I would share an event that I just heard about. This event especially piqued my interest because it's taking place at a venue that is perfect for a New Year's celebration. Any time someone chooses the Marcy Casino for a killer soiree (especially for such a magnanimous occasion), then why not try to support it. Did I mention that the night will include a Champagne toast at midnight, a photo booth, prom-style photo ops complete with cheesy backdrops, a butler serving hors d'oeuvres, live music, and unlimited beer and wine?
Each year BRO viewers start asking, "What's going on for New Years?" Well, here's the first party announcement. There's no dress code, but I would ho…
