The BGGs Are Looking For Land

http://www.buffalorising.com/city/archives/upload/2006/05/guerilla_gardenersaaa-thumb.jpg
Everyone knows of a small urban area of land in need of some sprucing up, right? The neglected pocket property might be littered with paper and cans. It is probably overgrown with weeds. And you probably walk or drive by it all the time. The land might be a stone's throw from City Hall, or maybe it is adjacent to a walking path near the water (photo). Either way, the Buffalo Guerilla Gardeners (BGGs) are gearing up for summer and want to know (from you) where some of these neglected pieces of property can be found.

If you are not familiar with the BGGs, then here's some history. The covert group was formed a year ago to take care of a handful of urban eyesores in neighborhoods throughout the city. Under the cover of night they have been spotted (or not spotted as the case may be) removing debris, digging up soil and planting bulbs and flowers. I know of a job they did in Allentown and another at the foot of City Hall. BRO viewers even donated funds and hardware to the group last summer to thank them for their efforts (and keep them going). So, it's that time of year again and the BGGs want to know where YOU have spotted a plot in distress. Remember: It has to be manageable (small), and you must provide detailed (not general) directions so that the group can find it.

On Porter, opposite side of the street from the Peace Bridge access road. Basically, in front of the old (really old) Duty-Free shop. This is a highly visible gateway to our city — especially in the summer! — and in desperate need of a sprucing up. Work is happening in Front Park and adjacent PBA property but that "other side of the street" is a disgusting wasteland.

Pop quiz: I know where that bunny & rainbow are. Does anyone else?

In spring of 2004 a group of volunteers from the Convention & Visitors Bureau and a small group of concerned citizens planted some flowers at four entry points to downtown, including a garden at Niagara and Virginia at the 190 on and off ramps. Unfortunately, the CVB's bed tax funding was slashed by 50 percent in February 2005 and we lost a third of our staff. Despite the loss of hands and funds, we managed to keep the garden looking presentable in 2005. Sadly, staff and budget conditions have not changed in 2006 and we find ourselves unable to give this plot the care it deserves. This is a highly visible entry and exit point to downtown and deserves better than to be choked with weeds. Kudos to the BGGs for their covert beautifcation efforts.
