The Botanical Gardens: A Kat's Eyes' View
Kathryn Buchnowski recently went to the Annual Orchid Show with her newly acquired digital camera and wanted to share some of the photos she took of her trip.
It was a great day! The turnout was fantastic. There was so much to see. When we arrived, I had wished we'd gotten there earlier, but as it turned out, I think the lighting was just perfect for this real amateur to get some pretty professional looking photographs.
What a joy it was to get a break from even this, the mildest of winters in Buffalo's history.
what a gem of a building
Beautiful photos Kathryn - thanks for sharing them!!!!
The Botanical Gardens are just great! The restoration and redevelopment of the building is good for Buffalo. What about considering a small yet elegant botanical garden in the downtown area near Buffalo's future waterfront development. It would be a great addition to the mix of projects planned.
Well, I cant wait for the Olmstead Conservancy to start work on South Park...the area surrounding the Botanical Gardens. I know they are going to dredge the lake and return the fish and water gardens, trees and other flora. Hopefully they will replace the asphalt with cobblestones and add some period lighting....to make it really authentic. Does anyone know when it will start?
Oh and regarding the waterfront. Hows this for an idea. Neither the Botanical Garden or the Zoo are close to downtown which means that visitors often dont make the trip to patronize them. However, if both participated in the waterfront museum with exhibits for Great Lakes Flora and Great Lakes Fauna. It will introduce them and peak their interest....and perhaps they will make the trip to Delaware Park and South Park. Plus its a nice segway to the BassPro recreation store. The Science & Historical Museums are using the waterfront museum for transportation (canal, port and rail), industry, inventions and technology....almost certainly introducing them to their main facilities.
If you think this is a good idea....then call the Botanical Gardens and the Zoo and tell them that they must be included and there must be exhibits for Great Lakes Flora and Fauna in the waterfront museum.
L - I do think it is a good idea. The small garden at Erie Basin Marina adds so much to the beauty of the waterfront and always has a crowd walking through it - I can only imagine how many might be attracted by a bigger display.
ddoerr, Imagine how many people dont know about the life present in all of the great lakes, or the animals native to our region, or the plants.
My biggest hope is that if the Buffalo Zoo and the Buffalo Botanical Gardens do something wonderful together with the Historical and Science Museum on the waterfront.....then visitors to the waterfront will take the journey to the westside, the eastside and southside to see the else is offered.
Of course, lets not forget that every one of our museums is set on a WONDERFUL OLMSTEAD DESIGNED PARK giving every visitor a memorable experience.
