While two teams vie for rights to redevelop the shuttered Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital site, Kaleida Health has found a taker for the old Deaconess Center located at 1001 Humboldt Parkway.  Kaleida Health will demolish the 268,000-square-foot facility to make it shovel ready for the Community Action Organization of Erie County Inc. (CAO).

N+P: Landscaping for Roofs
Now that Buffalo has laid claim to having some of the most impressive garden communities in the country, maybe it's about time to concentrate some of the endearing efforts on rooftop gardening. While the idea of growing a garden on your roof might sound interesting, there is of course certain criteria required to even consider the idea - namely, you must have a flat roof. While most houses in the city have sloped roofs, there are still plenty of examples of industrial residences that could benefit from having green landscaping instead of rubber membranes. "Anyone that's ever considered a green

Learning to Preserve the Local Harvest
On Tuesday, June 19, I joined 14 other women, two instructors, and one courageous young man at the Artisan Kitchens and Baths upstairs showroom to learn how to make strawberry jam. Upon entering the space where the class was being held (the location where the Nickel City Chef competitions are hosted), the first words out of nearly everyone's mouths were, "can I live here?" If you haven't been inside this space yet, your inner chef is missing out. Whether you're a culinary genius or you just like experimenting a little in the kitchen (or you simply like looking at shiny things), this space

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James Swanson
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Patricia Covley:
Manhunt reads like the most thrilling of crime novels.
President Lincoln was caught up in the excitement as most of Washington was celebrating the end of the Civil War.  His plans to attend the theater were discovered by actor and Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth.  Booth, who had hoped to kidnap Lincoln during the war, decided this would be an excellent opportunity to assassinate the president.  Additionally, Booth and

Collision Party at the Albright-Knox Kicks Off Summer

The combination of classic cars, avant-garde artwork, fantastic food, and great music made the Collision party at the Albright-Knox last night a fantastic event to kick start summer in Buffalo. The event was packed with people enjoying all the offerings of the night, especially the funky disco dance floor from Saturday Night Fever. Party goers took full advantage of the famous dance floor, many of them in period style clothes.

Classic muscle and luxury cars of the 1970s were on display which further added to the throwback vibe of the party.

Promoting innovation & entrepreneurship for a strong WNY economy
By Joann Steinmetz:
Keith Blakely wants Buffalo to play offense when it comes to growing the local economy.  As CEO of The Inventures Group (IVG), Blakely believes that entrepreneurs are the ones who generate true, sustainable job growth.  Aggressively creating an environment where they can flourish is what Blakely wants area business, government and higher education leaders to do.
As a seasoned entrepreneur and an innovator in advanced materials, Blakley sees the world from a

Roger Waters Nailed It Once Again
By Joe Cascio:
Roger Waters and his band charged into Buffalo and the First Niagara Center Thursday night to perform "The Wall" one more time for their fans here.  The wildly successful world tour made its second stop here to another sold out crowd in downtown.  Fans of Pink Floyd and Waters' solo career were treated to a rare second appearance of the tour and once again were not disappointed.
One of the highlights on all these stops has been the inclusion of a small group of kids who dance and perform during "Another

Hop at The Harbor today!
By Rebecca Boone:
The sweltering heat of this past week is predicted to stop just in time for the weekend, and of course sunshine and a breeze is the ideal weather to enjoy the waterfront.  If you're up for trying something new down by the water you should stop by the harbor tomorrow for some swing dancing.  Having recently tried my hand, or foot, at swing dancing I can say it's quite easy to pick up as your body just swings naturally to the music.
The dancing will take place from 1-2pm today (Saturday June 23) in the shade by

Cuomo’s Teacher Evaluation Disclosure Law Is a Great Compromise
By Jason Zwara:
As recently as last week, Governor Cuomo had yet to wade into the potential controversy surrounding public disclosure for teacher evaluation ratings. After New York City got caught up in a media firestorm following the full disclosure of teacher ratings, including teacher names, the State has been under pressure to restrict disclosure, especially after a court ruling would mandate full disclosure without an intervening law. On Monday night Cuomo introduced a bill grounded in compromise. On Thursday, the last day of the legislative session,

World Refugee Day Celebration and Soccer Tournament
By Rebecca Boone:
Not being the most popular sport in America, soccer stands in foreign territory.  But many other countries follow the sport closely and it helps forge connections through a common interest.
"Soccer is like a universal language- the rules are the same everywhere," said Mary Jo Marvin, who is the Chairperson for this year's soccer tournament during the third annual World Refugee Day Celebration.  The tournament will take place this weekend, just days after World Refugee Day, which is observed on the 20th

Celebrate Mexican Culture @ Casa de Arte
This Saturday there's an unusual Mexican art experience taking place at Casa de Arte in Allentown. For lovers of all things Mexican, including music, food, dancing, and art, the opening of "Masks To Set You Free" should be exactly what they need to romanticize about a country that is often times misunderstood and misrepresented.
On hand will be a dancing Chinelo, live music, and an appearance by local Mexican culinary guru Laura Anhalt who will be serving up her infamous tamales (see Laura's new cookbook). "The

Buffalo LIVING Tour... Condos, Lofts, & Suites
It's been a while since we've seen a downtown tour of urban loft units. While we always hear of the latest and greatest loft living scenarios, every once in a while we need to see, first hand, how the city is shaping up. Each year more units are added, and each year the interest grows. What is so interesting about downtown loft tours is that many times the people attending the tours do so in order to get a glimpse of the progress, and then realize that spaces are even better than they imagined. Thanks to Citybration (former Old Home Week), there are tours being given of places that we normally

2012 NHL Draft Preview
By Kyle Gunn-Taylor:
The buzz surrounding the 50th NHL Draft intensifies with each passing day, drawing teams closer to Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23 at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Buffalo Sabres are proud owners of 4 picks in the top 44, including the 12th and 21st overall (From Nashville), followed by an additional 7-picks over the final six rounds.
Back in late February, Darcy Regier made two aggressive deadline moves that certainly look to be two of the most efficient
