On March 31, Canisius and Roswell officially unveiled the "Check Yo Nutz" campaign, the Western New York area's first testicular cancer awareness program based on a college campus, targeted to men ages 15-40.

The campaign aims to increase awareness of the disease and make sure that these

James Heading for the Lights of Broadway
It's kind of hard to imagine James Karagiannis, aka The Ice Cream Dude, selling his wares from anything but his custom fridge bikes. When I last ran into James, he shared some exciting news with me. He told me that he is considering a permanent space at the Broadway Market in order to supplement sales when the bikes are not on the road. To me that sounded like a good idea, especially when I learned that his side gig during the off-season is delivering pizza (not on bike).

In recent months I've heard more and more people talking about The Broadway Market, and not just because the Easter

As more and more layers are being shed while the weather becomes more forgiving, the scarf remains, as one of the most chic carry-through items of the season. Scarves take on a whole new personality for spring, worn with more utility as a multi-tasking accessory. Worn flurry and free, scarves tie in beautifully with the notion of romantic

From Developer-Ready to Demolition-Ready?

Despite Sam Savarino's interest in converting the ravaged St. Mary's-on-the-Hill Church into residences, the City is moving forward with an emergency demolition order.  The landmarked circa-1903 church, now just a roofless shell, is located at the northeast corner of Niagara and Vermont streets directly behind the Connecticut Street Armory.

Theological Thursdays: Resurrection?
This week at my church, we continue deeper into the wonder that began anew on Easter, and we step into the biggest mystery of all, resurrection.

I like to think that this site's name comes from the Christian hope in resurrection, even if a connection to the Greek's Phoenix is just as likely.

Either way, I would like to suggest that resurrection is just the mindset that Buffalo needs.

I particularly like the metaphor that Paul uses to describe resurrection in 1

The Ghost Orchid By Carol Goodman

The historic Bosco estate in Upstate New York welcomes five talented individuals to its prestigious artist in residence program each year.  The current five find that their unique experiences at Bosco are eerily connected to a series of tragic events which occurred more than a century earlier.   Ellis Brooks is writing a first novel loosely based upon the tragedy.   She delves into the mystery of the disappearance of once famous spiritual medium Corinth

My Favorite Buildings: The Buffalo News
Yes, I know this one is a bit hard to love but love it I do.  It is a brute but it has good bones. Dwell Magazine in this online story agrees with me.  The building was built at a time of major urban renewal in this part of downtown.  The paper originally occupied a very old and ornate commercial building on Main that stood in the way of the proposed Marine Midland Building (now HSBC).  The old building was beautiful but it was the kind of beauty that was not so much appreciated in those days.

Frisbee Golf Anyone?
Have you noticed that on warmer days Bidwell Parkway has turned into a Frisbee thrower's paradise? There are more Kan-Jammers, casual throwers and even some golfers these days. I've talked to a few of the players who have expressed an interest in seeing a Frisbee golf course established somewhere in the city, but not being an expert in the game, I thought that I would reach out to readers who play, to see if there is enough room to map a course at one of the local parks.

Frisbee golf has turned into a passionate sport that has gained a ton of momentum over the past five years. Not only

Parkside Momentum is at a Crossroad
With the news of a second Sweet_ness 7 (S7) moving into the Parkside community, and other recent developments such as the Parkside House B&B, there appears to be a crucial momentum building that is palpable yet still fragile. While visiting the S7 diggs yesterday, I was surprised to see that the old Park Meadow (The PM) was occupied by an eatery called Luzvina's Family Restaurant. That means that soon both of the Russell Street corners at Parkside will be occupied.

S7 Café
If there is one thing that you can say about Prish Moran, owner of Sweet_ness 7 on Grant Street, it's that she is never idle. You would think that managing a rather large, multi-use building with both residential and commercial tenants would be a full time job. Prish operates the café, oversees the Grant Street Art Gallery, constantly interacts with her tenants, and brainstorms ways to create dynamic enterprises out of underutilized spaces.

In recent weeks, Prish has set her eyes on an entirely different area of the city. After being approached by Penny Wyatt, owner of a property located

Backyard Solutions Features The Wee House
Once again, one of the city's eye-catching gardens has made an appearance in a national gardening magazine called Backyard Solutions. Although there were five gardens featured in the magazine, the one shown here (corner of Bryant and Ashland) happens to be growing around a prized urban house. People who live in the neighborhood call it The Wee House, mainly due to its exceptionally small size.

I've had the pleasure of walking inside this small structure and can attest to the surprisingly comfortable layout within. As much as I have written about the house in the past on BRO, the corner
