Amazing Opportunity!

One of Buffalo's most significant houses is on the market.  156 Park Street in Allentown is for sale listed at $400,000.  The unusual home was the residence of Charles Rolfs who was a prominent craftsman style furniture designer and his wife who was a famous novelist.  She was a pioneering

Porter Avenue to be restored as an Olmsted Parkway in 2009
BRO submission by Chris Brown:

Heavily-utilized Porter Avenue, one of Buffalo's most historic streets, is scheduled to receive a $1.8 million make-over in 2009 to return it to its former splendor as an Olmsted Parkway.

Porter Avenue is one of Buffalo's oldest streets, pre-dating Joseph Ellicott's design for the village. It was once an ancient Indian trail, in use since the Revolutionary War. It was called "Guide Board Road," and was a passage from Main Street to the Niagara River and a ferry that would carry British loyalists to safety in Canada. The street was

Bikes, Boats (and beer) - The Chain and The Spirit of Buffalo!
A friend of mine, Trina Tardone, is hosting (tending bar) Bike and Boat Night at McCarthy's Irish Pub on Wednesdays. McCarthy's has been growing in popularity with the bike and boat crowd, so it was only natural for Trina to suggest that her 'night on' be devoted to promoting the two cultures. It just so happened that two of her activist acquaintances, Justin Booth and Pierre Wallinder, were both looking for ways to promote their own interests - biking and boating. Both activists were pushing for a way to bring

Ristorante Lombardo

As a full-blooded, first-generation Siciliana, when I go to an Italian restaurant, food is only a part of what I look for.  I want comfort, familiarity, easy eleganza and food I might not make myself, but that which brings back memories or makes entirely new ones.

And then there's that

Growing Up City: Small Town America?
I had this H-O scale train set-up in the basement when I was young. I spent hours down there putting together buildings, adding landscaping,  making roads, and configuring track.  It started out as a train layout but, really, the thing that drew me to this miniature world was the ability to study urban design.  The layout depicted a small town.  This was mostly because the buildings I had were of a small town type.
The town had a main street and several

The Broadway Market - Call For Easter Vendors
There's a big push to make this coming Easter Festival at the Broadway Market the best in recent years. In order to pull that off, the market is looking for an influx of vendors to add diversity and density to the historic establishment. We all have different reasons to stop by the market during the spring shopping season - butter lambs are always a big hit (don't get me started), though personally I like to head over to grab a bite to eat at one of the many food offerings.

To me there have always been plenty of food offerings at the market. But if there was more overall diversity,

So, where does that leave those who appreciate a world captured in black and white? To answer the question, black and white film

Living At The Rock
Now that we've seen renderings and heard descriptions of Rock Harbor Commons (latest rendering shown), it's time to talk about the overall vision for the surrounding village. Of course, The Commons is just one piece of the puzzle, and the puzzle is ultimately another puzzle piece. If you think about this former brownfield in Black Rock, it is ideally situated between a number of key communities. To the north is historic Amherst Street and to the south is Forest Avenue  - a street that takes you to Grant Street and Elmwood

Local Artist Peter Fowler Commemorates Obama Family
The day after Barack Obama won the presidential election, local artist Peter Fowler was excited enough to create a 4' x 8' canvas of the president-elect.
The top image is a subsequent painting Fowler did, featuring the entire Obama family.  He says it was inspired by this painting of John Singer Sargent's and a compilation of photos of the first family. "I liked the idea of the Singer painting that had these different family members sort
