D’Youville Moving Forward
During a recent tour of D'Youville's future Pharmacy Program building*, I couldn't help but envision what the neighborhood would look like in years to come. D'Youville's campus is in the midst of adding a state-of-the-art academic and lab facility that will (Fall of '10) attract top-notch faculty (starting with a Dean from Pittsburgh). As a matter of fact, Don Keller (photo right) clued me in that D'Youville has spent over $70,000,000, over the last ten years, on buildings including a library, a gymnasium, and apartments (lead image). Not only is there a building going up that will one day house

BR friend and photographer Glenn E. Murray, Esq., took in Garden Walk Buffalo this past weekend.  The following is what he had to say, along with sending his pictures, which speak several thousand more words:

Pink Floyd Would Be Proud
When I first saw that a structure was going up at the corner of Pennsylvania and Niagara I was nervous. I had heard that the corner was getting a Dollar Store - with a traditional Dollar Store design. As I started to see what was being erected I actually laughed out loud. Why, in this day and age, are we still allowing anyone to take a corner like this and build walls? There's a wall on Pennsylvania and a wall on Niagara. I assume that the parking lot will be located off Niagara featuring an entranceway barely visible from the street. It's a traditional Dollar Store type of set up. Why on earth

The Jolly Green Ice Machine Tour Comes To Buffalo
When I was a kid, I really enjoyed writing and drawing, and while I was comically bad at math, I masterfully quoted The Simpsons and considered myself to be very witty (as witty as you can be as a 6-12 year old).  Teachers didn't really think it was funny or particularly helpful, and I was reprimanded a lot. I wasn't a troublemaker, but I surely wasn't a teacher's pet.  Because I was creative.
I wonder how many of my classmates felt that their own creativity was stifled by an authoritative education system that handcuffed our teachers into cramming

Theological Thursdays: Garden Theology
It's garden walk week.  And for many people of faith, it all begins with a garden

A favorite bumpersticker of mine states, "God's original plan was to hang out in a garden with some naked vegetarians."  While I would recommend that you put something on for this years gardenwalk, if only to avoid arrest, other aspects of that early story can be applied more directly.  Here are three theological propositions to consider as you enjoy the gardens

Mural, Mural on the Wall
Thanks to a community effort led by members of the Charismatic Center, a hi-profile Grant Street mural is getting a much-needed facelift. Located at the corner of Grant and West Ferry, the mural is representative of an old-world market scene. Thanks to a renewed drive to brand Grant-Ferry as an International Marketplace, the mural has been chosen to broadcast the effort to the neighborhood.

The artwork is being restored by a wide range of volunteers ranging from refugees who live nearby to the Khol's Department Store's A-Team. Kohl's donated $500 to provide the local businesses (led

Sneak Peak: Federal Courthouse

Many gasped in disappointment as builders began cladding the new federal courthouse on Niagara Square with heavy concrete panels.  We had been promised a shimmering glass building.  Was this a bait and switch? Had cost cutting sliced the life from the building?  We were assured that the building is still destined to have a curtain of sparkling glass

Here's something we like to hear in conjunction with a local notable who gets national press: Growth Curve. That's what the Wall Street Journal has to say about the trajectory of typeface designer Richard Kegler's career and the ultimate popularity of his work.
Kegler, co-founder of P22 Type Foundry and director of Western New York Book Arts Center at 468 Washington (at Mohawk), formed his P22
