Then and Now: A Parkside Redo Repost
A few days ago I posted A story about the beautiful Wicks House on Jewett Parkway across the street from the Wright-designed Darwin Martin house in the Parkside neighborhood.  Soon after that BRO posted an announcement for the 13th annual Parkside Tour of Homes which will be held in about 2 weeks on May 22.  With that in mind I thought I would dig up an old post from February 2006 and keep

Celia White on the passing of Michael Meldrum
I first encountered Mike Meldrum at a concert during WNY Peace Week, in May 1983. Baby poet in glasses and braids, I marched alone in the crowd, then sat in the grass at Buffalo State College listening o Mike sing, a capella, the Steve Goodman song "Penny Evans", about a young Vietnam War widow, who'd send back the government's checks because they'd never return her lover.

Michael believed in the value of a song. When I got to know him a few years later, it was as a musician liaison to City Honors School. In one memorable season, he brought Eric Andersen, Suzanne Vega, Michelle Shocked,

Envisioning a Complete Niagara Street for the 21st Century

The proposed plan for the future of Niagara Street is ambitious and incredible; it envisions how the prominent city street should be in the 21st century. The project is the result of two semesters work between eight students from five different countries, in the department of architecture and urban planning at UB. It brings all disciplines together to create more livable and sustainable places. The group's definition of a complete street is one that is accessible to all users, this includes pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, etc.

While the plan

The Queen City Ferry
The Queen City Ferry will begin its operations around Memorial Day and continue through Labor Day, or even longer if the need arises. The ferry, which will seat 35 passengers and some bikes, will take people to various points of interest around the Inner and Outer Harbor. It will take people to restaurants, events and activities including but not limited to: Dug's Dive, Festival Park, Times Beach Nature Preserve, an NFTA post, and the Outer Harbor bike trails. The ferry ride will not include a historical tour of the waterfront, but it is hoped that a bit of history can be played out during the

By Gladys Gifford, Citizens for Regional Transit President:

The City of Buffalo is the lead agency for the Cars on Main Street project, joined by Buffalo Place, the NFTA and the NYSDOT.  The current design for the 600 block will demolish the Theater Station and guide vehicular traffic (cars) to drive on the tracks ("railbed") between the Metro Rail portal and Chippewa Street.

Citizens for Regional Transit (CRT) offers an alternative design for Cars on Main Street (see PDF) that will

The Stella B. Foundation was started three years ago following the death of our daughter. She lost a 3 week battle with a cancerous tumor and a coinciding infection. Our family was left devastated. We struggled, and still struggle with this loss.  As a result of our time at Women's and Children's Hospital of Buffalo we witnessed

Hydrofracking: Where are the scientists?
At the WNED studios downtown Wednesday night was a public forum entitled "The Future of Fracking". As part of WNED's "Innovation Trail" show, the free public meeting was meant to address Western New Yorker's concerns on the issue of Hydraulic Fracturing.

Speaking were three apparent experts on the issue: Michael Joy, an oil and gas attorney for Biltekoff and Joy LLP, Sarah Eckel, legislative director for Citizens Campaign for the Environment, and Martin Casstevens, the director of Directed Energy. Biltekoff & Joy and Directed Energy are located in Amherst, and Citizens Campaign for

Buffalo Irish Festival Moving to the Statler Hotel
Just in time for its 30th anniversary, the Buffalo Irish Festival has found a new home at the Statler Hotel.

The festival was first held in 1982 at Weimer's Grove in Lancaster as a celebration of Irish heritage and the history of the Irish community in Buffalo.  After spending 20 consecutive years in Lancaster, the festival was moved to the festival grounds at the pier on the city's Outer Harbor. In 2005, organizers had to relocate once again when "big things" were slated to start developing at the harbor, so the festival

Theological Thursdays: The Last Days of Osama bin Laden
Last Thursday, I was fortunate to be invited, along with other area clergy, to take in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot as presented by Road Less Traveled Productions. I, like everybody else in the audience, had no idea that the man behind the 9-11 attacks was about to die, but the questions raised by the play prepared us for the weekends events.  The main one being: "Is any person beyond forgiveness?"

Now, it certainly is understandable to answer, in cases like Judas', or bin Laden's that

My Favorite Buildings: Wicks House
For a long time I didn't pay much attention to this house at 124 Jewett Parkway in the Parkside neighborhood.  Its tall stature and massive 'blockiness' stand in stark contrast to the low and sprawling Darwin Martin House directly across the street. The Wicks House was designed and built by William Sydney Wicks for his own home. Wicks was one half of the prolific and highly talented architecture firm of Green and Wicks.  These two architects together may be more responsible than any others in shaping the historic Buffalo we inherited. The house is designed in a very austere half timber

Main Washington Exchange - Making a Mark on Buffalo
Following is my account of a series of events that are both uplifting and disheartening... a story that is almost incomprehensible to me as I sit here and type out these words.

I first met Mark Kirsch... scratch that. I first received an email from Mark Kirsch (photo) on January 5th, 2011. The email read as follows:

"We have met many times over the years, mostly in social settings. I am starting a new business incubator downtown that will specialize in art, graphics, design, media, and technology. CREATIVITY. This [concept] has been in the planning for two years..."
