  • Commented on Stadiums Everywhere Announce Arrest of Second Suspect (Except First Niagara)
Here, you can watch a video of fans around the country reacting: http://deadspin.com/baseball-fans-react-to-the-capture-of-the-second-bombin-476575215...
  • Posted Stadiums Everywhere Announce Arrest of Second Suspect (Except First Niagara) to Buffalo Rising
Last night, the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was captured alive. After an emotional week, the capture of the remaining suspect was one of those cathartic moments that a country shares on television, on social media, in bars and restaurants and in stadiums. Except, of course, if you were at First Niagara. The Sabres were hosting the New York Rangers and playing for their playoff lives. There were a significant amount of Rangers fans in the arena and, perhaps because of that, there was actually energy in the arena. The Sabres played a solid first period until the final...
  • Commented on 196 Soldiers Place: Canadians Offer Half-Off Sale
A few thoughts: * Yes, if this house was in San Francisco, it would be 'worth' more. But it isn't. If it was in space, it would float. Both of those points seem equally relevant. * Low property values don't...
  • Commented on 196 Soldiers Place: Canadians Offer Half-Off Sale
It wouldn't be a net gain. Well, it would be for current property owners who would benefit from reduced expenses and a resulting increase in their property's value. But it would, in all likelihood, be a net wash for buyers...
  • Commented on 196 Soldiers Place: Canadians Offer Half-Off Sale
Apropos of the conversation re: property taxes, a dated (but interesting) WSJ article on Buffalo's property taxes. . . http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122852270789884347.html...
  • Commented on 196 Soldiers Place: Canadians Offer Half-Off Sale
Certainly not implying the current price is a great deal (or any kind of deal). The house is worth what someone will pay for it. Period. And given the precipitous drop in price since the house's listing, it's quite obvious...
  • Posted 196 Soldiers Place: Canadians Offer Half-Off Sale to Buffalo Rising
A little less than three years ago, the Canadian government purchased the house at 196 Soldiers Place to serve as the home of the Consulate General. Attorney Herb Siegel sold the house to the Canadians for $1.39M which is one of the highest priced single family home transactions in Buffalo history. After purchasing the house, the Canadians invested approximately $200,000 to upgrade the home. So, in total, they invested approximately $1.6M into the property. Then, in May of last year, the Canadian government decided to close the Buffalo consulate and sell their properties. Not surprisingly, 196 Soldiers Place was then listed for sale...
  • Posted Ouch: Buffalo Named The Least Fashionable City in America to Buffalo Rising
Buffalo is the least fashionable city in America, according to a new ranking from Bundle.com. How did Bundle.com come up with this ranking? Did they just rank cities inversely to their Zubaz-density? No, the methodology was a little more complicated than that. Bundle used their data on retail transactions in the 50 biggest cities in their database. Using this data, Bundle created an index of "fashion-conscious households" which were defined as households that had at least four transactions at top-end designer merchants in the past 30 months. A city ranked 1.0 is perfectly average (by Bundle's fashion-conscious metric). And perfectly average is where...
  • Posted Anderson Cooper: Dyngus Day Apology to Buffalo Rising
As you've certainly heard by now, Anderson Cooper had a gigge-fit during a segment on Dyngus Day.Predictably, some Buffalonians got outraged. Why? Well, because a lot of people just enjoy getting outraged. It's become a hobby for people, like fishing or golf. The official Dyngus Day organization responded to Cooper's giggling by holding a "Pro-Dyngus Day Rally."At the "rally," there were more media members than rally participants (as you can see from the YouTube video below). And there were more pussy willows than rally participants and media members combined.  To heal the emotions of the "offended," Anderson Cooper took to the...
  • Posted Anderson Cooper Hears About Dyngus Day, Laughs Uncontrollably to Buffalo Rising
You may find this surprising, but not everyone is familiar with Dyngus Day. And when people hear about Dyngus for the first time, they often laugh. Well, CNN's Anderson Cooper did a segment on Buffalo's Dyngus Day history last night during his recurring feature, The Ridiculist, and boy did he think Dyngus Day was funny. He made it through the first couple minutes of the segment without laughing but, once there was mention of girls hitting boys with pussy willows, Cooper lost it. And a minute-long gigglefest ensued. Now, this isn't Cooper's first hysterical breakdown. He's had laughing fits before. But...
  • Posted Bill Sign Stevie Johnson to 5 Year Contract to Buffalo Rising
Many people doubted it would happen. But the Bills proved the doubters wrong (this time). Today, the Bills announced they have signed Stevie Johnson to a 5 year contract, keeping the controversial wide out in a Bills uniform through 2017. Reportedly, Johnson will earn $7.25M per year in his new deal; not bad for a 7th round draft pick. Johnson, of course, is the Bills most prolific receiver with 170 receptions for 2,077 yards and 17 touchdowns over the past 2 years. Losing Johnson would have created yet another hole on the roster. Now, with #13 re-signed, the Bills can use the...
  • Posted Janice Okun, the Only Restaurant Critic in the History of the Buffalo News, Retires (Kinda) to Buffalo Rising
Her career began at The Buffalo News in 1974. She "retired" in 2009 but it seems that retirement was figurative as she continued to write the restaurant reviews in addition to another weekly column. Now, after 38 years and hundreds of restaurant reviews, Okun has decided to "step down" according to a column by editor Margaret Sullivan. Now, this isn't exactly a retirement either. Instead, Okun is stepping down from the restaurant review column. Okun will still have a byline at The News as she'll continue with her column for the Wednesday Taste section of the paper. So, for those of you keeping score...
  • Commented on The World's Oldest Hockey Arena is in Buffalo. And It's a Garage.
Wait, you have a quibble with the accuracy of the information because I used the actor's actual birth name?...
  • Posted The World's Oldest Hockey Arena is in Buffalo. And It's a Garage. to Buffalo Rising
We all remember the Memorial Auditorium. But before that Aud, there was another Aud. And it's this other Aud which the New York Times declares the oldest extant building to have hosted professional hockey. It's the former Broadway Auditorium. WNY Heritage Press has some amazing photos of what the Broadway Auditorium used to look like. Today, it looks much different because it's used as a garage for city plows. But back in the day, it was home to the American Hockey Association Buffalo Majors. The Broadway Aud also housed conferences, bowling tournaments, bike races, boxing and the circus. Oh, and Tonto used to hang...
  • Commented on Joffrey Lupul Are Bad at English
    A) I don't think I made it into an international incident. He ran some smack, I ran some smack back. As I wrote, this adds to the rivalry. This sort of thing can be fun and enjoyable so lighten up...
  • Posted Joffrey Lupul Are Bad at English to Buffalo Rising
Have you ever heard of Joffrey Lupul? Probably not. Yes, he's a professional hockey player but he plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs so he is, like his team, largely irrelevant. His career highlights include playing on the WHL East All-Star team in 2001-02. Yes, the WHL. Since then, he's enjoyed what could generously be called an 'almost average' career though he's peaking now as he was just named - get this -  the NHL's 3rd Star of the Month for November 2011. Impressive, huh? Anyway, Lupul is in Buffalo today as the Leafs are here to play the Sabres...

  • Commented on On Roger Goodell, Michael Vick and Ralph Wilson
He was 80 years old when he blasted Paul Tagliabue. Was that the twilight of his life? This "non-story" is being covered by every major sports media outlet and this "non-story" forced Goodell to issue a statement yesterday denying that...
  • Posted On Roger Goodell, Michael Vick and Ralph Wilson to Buffalo Rising
The biggest story in the NFL right now comes from a GQ story on the "impossible, inevitable redemption of Michael Vick." In the article, Vick explains how he didn't want to go to Philadelphia and be a third-string quarterback behind Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb. That makes a lot of sense as McNabb was a franchise quarterback seemingly secure in his starter position. And Kevin Kolb was a highly touted back-up who many in Philly were hoping would take over from McNabb.  So it seemed strange that Vick would choose Philly. So why did he? Well, the GQ interview puts it...
  • Posted WGR Movie Comedy Draft: A Review to Buffalo Rising
You're probably familiar with WGR550 - it's an AM radio station and yes people still listen to AM radio. WGR, the leading sports talk radio station in WNY, occasionally strays from sports - a completely understandable decision given how dismal the Buffalo sports scene can get. Today, WGR staff engaged in one of their much-talked about drafts. During Schopp and the Bulldog, Mike Schopp, Bulldog, Greg Bauch and Jeremy White drafted the best comedy movies of all time. Or they tried to. The premise here is simple - you're trying to assemble a 'team' of the best comedies factoring in the...
  • Posted Common Council to Food Trucks: Don't Move! to Buffalo Rising
It was one year ago that Lloyd the taco truck arrived on the Buffalo food scene. Lloyd has experienced a tremendous amount of success since then for a very simple reason - the food is great. Operating a food truck is no simple business, though. The trucks are expensive and require significant maintenance. A popular truck - like Lloyd - can struggle with capacity issues as customers line up for product. And in Buffalo, there are no clear rules and regulations for how food trucks are allowed to operate. So to date, Lloyd and other Buffalo food trucks needed a permit...
  • Posted Sabres Fans Turn on Briere: #UntrueBriereFacts to Buffalo Rising
Buffalo is buzzing as the city plays host to Game 3 of the Sabres/Flyers series tonight. The Party in Plaza will be kicking off at 5pm and there will be a "white out" as fans will reportedly be given white pom poms at the entrance points. To ratchet up the contempt generated by any playoff series, Sabres fans on Twitter have launched a new meme pointing out more and more reasons to dislike former Sabre Danny Briere. You may recall the last Buffalo Twitter meme we covered - #fakegagasightings - and it's remarkable how quickly these things develop.  And it's...
  • Posted Lady Gaga Spotted Everywhere, Kinda (#FakeGagaSightingsBUF) to Buffalo Rising
Did you see Lady Gaga at Ted's?  Or maybe you saw her at the Polish Villa? Well, Lady Gaga is performing at the HSBC Arena tonight and she's been spotted all over WNY today. Just like when Barack Obama was at Duff's except no one can produce video of Lady Gaga's alleged appearances around WNY.   As a result, the local Twitter scene has erupted with a #fakegagasightingsBUF hashtag. If you're not on Twitter, you should be - if for no other reason than to watch the #fakegagasightingsBUF roll in.  We've curated a list of some of the best fake...

  • Posted The 8 Most Remarkable Photos of Shirtless Buffalonians to Buffalo Rising
Inspired by the spectacular flameout of Congressman Chris Lee, who sent a shirtless photo to a woman he met on Craigslist, we've taken the time to assemble a list of the top 8 photos of shirtless Buffalonians.  Now, we've taken some liberty with the term Buffalonian.  For the purposes of the shirtless list, a Buffalonian is anyone with significant ties to Buffalo not just someone who was born and raised here. But you simply can't argue with a list that includes Vincent Gallo, TO and Patrick Kane. If we're missing any other famous shirtless shots, please let us know in the...
