Groove to live downtempo jazz by featured musician David Kane on the first floor, and kick up you heels to the DJ stylings of Matt Olmsted on the beautiful second floor. The night would not be complete without the opportunity to bid on artwork in the Silent Auction by regional and national artists,...
  • Posted Last Minute Panic Holiday Marketplace to Buffalo Rising
Friday Dec 17 & Saturday Dec 18. In the spirit of community and conspicuous consumerism, a great way to buy thoughtful obligatory gifts and support your own community is by shopping locally and buying locally made items. This is nothing new, but always worth remembering when the thought of your shopping dollars going out of town could in fact stay here and support local artisans. Of the many holiday shopping opportunities this year, the "Last Minute Panic Holiday Marketplace" at the WNY Book Arts Center stands out as an edgy arts and crafts event with over 20 vendors who make,...

  • Posted Kickstarting arts community needs to Buffalo Rising
Fundraising for art projects is one of the toughest things to attempt in a recession. Traditional funding sources like foundations and grant makers generally have less to give and more and more applications to consider. New models for fundraising such as the online Kickstarter offer a unique way for people to pitch their projects directly to the public to enable micro-donation, and just like a long-tail model predicts, those micro-donations can add up to significant amounts. Several local projects have seen the value in this new method of fiscal tree-shaking. Just recently, the non-profit WNY Book Arts Center (WNYBAC) in...
  • Posted The Art of The Broadside to Buffalo Rising
The history of Buffalo and the printed word is a long-storied one. The treasures in the Poetry Collection at UB and popularity of the Babel series from Just Buffalo Literary Center show that this city still figures prominently on the world stage of poetics. Buffalo's oldest non-profit press, White Pine Press, has published some of the most notable poets over the last 40 years. This week, White Pine Press teams up with Buffalo's newest non-profit dedicated to the visual art of the printed and written word, the WNY Book Arts Center for a unique fundraising event. This special benefit sale...

This Thursday and Saturday, the WNY Book Arts Center we will be offering two unique workshops with guest instructors from Starshaped Press in Chicago.  Starshaped Press is a letterpress studio committed to keeping their work as authentic to the old ways as possible, meaning that all projects are printed using hand-set antique metal and wood type. In holding to the belief that there is no digital equivalent to the inherent beauty and imperfection of type that is sometimes 100 years old, Starshaped has adopted the motto: "All Metal, All the Time (Except When it's Wood)." This level of commitment to...
  • Posted Bobo Reunion Gig at Mohawk Place to Buffalo Rising
The Buffalo music scene is as diverse and fragmented as any major American city. People speak of local legends who have made it in the big time (ie commercial success) and when rattling off names associated with Buffalo, the range of styles is staggering: Ani DiFranco, Spyro Gyra, Cannibal Corpse, Mercury Rev, Moe, Goo Goo Dolls, Harold Arlen? One local band worthy of a larger audience but seemingly destined for mythical status only is Bobo . The cognoscenti of the Buffalo bar band scene seldom have an indifferent reaction to Bobo and its focal point/lead singer Jimmer Phillips. This pop/pub-rock/punk band...

More and more people are realizing that the DIY (Do-it-yourself) movement is really on to something. Making your own books, prints and other objects has a level of gratification that cannot be compared. In tight economic times, making your own gifts can be doubly gratifying. As the art of fine crafts shows (as seen at the recent Burchfield Penney Art Center Exhibit: Art in Craft media), craft can be much more than busy-work for kids. One specific area of craft, the growing book arts community in Buffalo has more resources than ever.  Along with the recently announced Just Buffalo "Studio How...

The Old Adage, Think Globally, Act Locally has many possible applications. The global recession has hit Buffalo hard and it has become a struggle for many small businesses to stay open. • Posted Rockford Files to Buffalo Rising
...he also nails, saws, glues and otherwise dissembles and re-assembles what some people might otherwise dismiss as junk into clever and precious artwork. As Richard Rockford says on his website: "I try to create art that causes the viewer to start seeing old things, discarded things, items around them everywhere, as having beauty of color and texture. I take old surfaces - wooden panels, ink-stained blocks, deconstructed household furniture - and without changing their color and texture, I make them part of something colorful, genuine and beautiful."Rockford's work is reminiscent of the Dadaists and Constructivists of the early 20th century but there are clear and...

Poet in Process have garnered a large following in their native Spain but not by having a "Spanish" sound. Playing Sunday for an early show at Mohawk Place, this may be the perfect way to wind down after St. Patrick's Day parade festivities in Buffalo. Their style has the full 80s alt-rock guitar based sound of U2 or Echo & the Bunnymen combined with female dream pop vocal stylings reminiscent of the Sundays and the Cardigans.
