Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
Again, bull! Trees grow quite fast, and are near maturity in 5 years or so - not 20. And buildings are normally maintained 20, 30 years and their whole life cycle - so cracks, dirt, etc. are seldom a problem....
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
No, it's simply reality. I don't know any designer anywhere who would show dirty, abandoned buildings, junk strewn adjacent lots, winos, cracks and dirt from an aged building that hasn't even been built in a project rendering, and you don't...
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
And it's not puffery or fraud to show a building on a nice day. Show me any project rendering showing hurricane damage and a flood or dark thunderstorm with threatening skys, and I'll give you a thousand bucks right here....
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
It has always been taught that that if you had two projects, and one was a lesser quality but had a real good presentation/rendering, and the other was a better design with really poor presentation/rendering, then it was best to...
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
Bull! Then you prove you know nothing about design or architecture. Showing saplings, when they would exist as such for only a short time, would be the fraud. The mature trees would be he reality in that they would exist...
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
"Please explain to me, then, why architects so often refuse to include reality in their renderings. Like this one, they never show parking lots as they actually look. I can't tell you how many renderings I have seen where the...

Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
In this case, the "context" was ugly ass and decrepit buildings, along with desolate empty lots, etc. Sure way to sell the design... yeah - I'm sure the Clients would love to have that "context"....
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
I only used the "transpo center" moniker because it was used in the post I was responding to. I agree - it's only a glorified bus station - but it is a really good glorified bus station....
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
I forgot to add that I've always liked this building. I've also always wished all the parking lots that line up between N & S Division could be turned into park space, with nice (tall) buildings lining up on either...

Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
Misspelled "brutalist"....
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
This is not a "brutilist" building by any means. City Court, and the Buffalo News buildings can be considered that, but this, no. Just because a building has one or two blank walls does not make it a "brutilist" building....
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
Actually, this transpo center sits well within and on the major bus routes of the city. It is NOT far away from all the connecting bus routes. The bus routes purposely bend their way into the area at and near...
-
Commented on Then and Now: Buffalo's Bus Stop
Steel You should know better, regarding your comments on the lack of other buildings pictured in the Architect's renderings. Even today, unless a budget is very generous or the owners/client insists, we seldom picture other buildings except the current project,...

Commented on Something like this?
Is there a way to add a picture to a response? Parking structures don't need to be "ugly" at all. And, that NYC example is horrible and not an "improvement"! Clarksville Tennessee has a great "traditional style" structure that one...

Commented on Craziness: $200 Million Parking Plan Floated
"I have no idea why an employer would have special lots for employees. In many viable cities no employer worries about parking for their employees or anyone else." Really?!!! REALLY?!!! That has got to be one of the most ignorant...

Commented on Statler sits pretty in Buffalo... for now.
What about the "Buffalo Billion" that was pushed with great fanfare awhile back? Why wasn't this explored at this time?...

Commented on ULI Heads North to Niagara Falls for an Overview of The Giacomo
There have been periods of Gothic, Greek, and Georgian Revivals, so I don't doubt at all that an "Art Deco" Revival period will follow in some future period of building activity. We just might not be alive when it happens....

Commented on ULI Heads North to Niagara Falls for an Overview of The Giacomo
Great job in saving the building - the exterior is wonderfully restored. I've enjoyed closely following the fate of this building from a child many years ago to the present. Great disappointment for the interior by the Interior Desecrator. Realize...

Commented on ECIDA's Heavy Agenda: Nearly $300 million in City Projects to be Considered
I agree with what you stated. But what's a "declining" city supposed to do if not "incentivize" investment? Other regions do it - hell - Texas goes to California to try to take businesses from California according to the latest...

Commented on Construction Watch: One Canalside
You do realize that all those older buildings you apparently admire had "steel skeletons" beneath all those "skins" you prefer... There is nothing "cheesy" about a material - it is always about how the designer chooses to implement the materials....
-
Commented on Construction Watch: One Canalside
Yes, and all due to the COST of construction. Brick, terracotta, and similar materials were the "cheaper" materials of the earlier era, and are quite maintenance intensive during the life of a structure (repointing of joints, spalling of surfaces, etc.)....
-
Commented on Construction Watch: One Canalside
To refine my comments - I see where people might see plywood - on the center overhang at the top - sure looks like it from the distance in the photo. We've thought of using treated plywood only on the...
-
Commented on Construction Watch: One Canalside
I was thinking of the exact thing way back when the redevelopment discussions began. It would be a good thing. Maybe some other existing federal building could do the honors? It's sad to lose the city's history as the years...
-
Commented on Construction Watch: One Canalside
I seriously doubt they would even think of using plywood on a Type I building, which this surely is. It's more likely the latest color for an exterior sheathing material....

Commented on Webster Block Plan Advances; Alternative Vision Floated
MPM originally for at least 5 years after it first opened was exactly what you posted. It could easily be altered to do that again if the demand and circumstances allowed that. It was quite nice actually. Then the gangs...

Commented on Construction Watch: Tishman and Catholic Health Projects Underway

Commented on Webster Block Plan Advances; Alternative Vision Floated
While most of what you posted is true, it is true for any one particular city, and that city is usually booming is a construction burst and, burdened with a rash of development. Buffalo is sadly, or thankfully, depending on...

Commented on 196 Soldiers Place: Canadians Offer Half-Off Sale
And due to the prop 13, Cali went from the best educational system to a basket case because they can't/refuse to pay for the services the people want! Thank god that these policies are being reversed now, and Cali is...
