Here's a true blue Buffalo eatery for you... the Swannie House. Located amidst the city's hulking grain elevators, stepping into the Swannie is like stepping back into history. If you have never been to the Swannie House, finding it can be a small chore, but that can also be half the fun as well. Part of the charm of the eatery is the drive (or bike) there.…

Horseradish & Butterlambs (& FREE parking!)
You don't have to wait until Good Friday to make a pilgrimage to the Broadway Market. In fact, if you go soon, you will beat the crowds that descend upon this century old marketplace around Eastertime. On this bright but chilly Saturday, we headed over to the Bway Mkt with some family for a little lunch and browsing. We came home with full bellies, some butterla…

Oh boy, did we stumble upon something good last night... The Viking Lobster Company. Not only is it fun to say that you are heading to dinner there, this is the type of place that you always hoped was in Buffalo, but just never knew where to find it. Finding it is half the battle it seems, as the dinner joint is located off Amherst Street…
I swore I wouldn't do it. 2 and 1/2 years in Buffalo and the whole time I stuck to my guns. If this was the only thing on the menu I would sip a glass of water and chew a napkin while my friends chowed down. With a fox, in a box, uh uh, no way.
I would not eat no fried bologna.
So the other day we're dropping off stacks of the latest edition of Buffalo Rising magazine and we stop at Louie's. It's well past lunch. I'm ravenous. I figure I'll grab a dog -- something quick, something easy on the wallet. I'm at the counter, my eyes glance over at the daily special, and I hear the following come out of my mouth. "I'll have the Charcoal Broiled Bologna Helicopter Sandwich."

With Lent around the corner Friday fish-fry season is upon us. It is time to start lining up places in which to partake in that most comfortable of comfort foods. WNY most certainly must be the epicenter of the fish-fry universe. It is difficult to find a bad fish and chips in Buffalo and places that serve the delectable dish are everywhere. That is no excuse, however, not to enjoy the best of the best when you get the craving for golden batter.
Pat McGinty's, at 38 swan, directly across from Dunn Tire Park, possibly qualifies as the best of the best when it comes to fried fish. My father first introduced my wife and I to this place in an effort to satisfy our own craving for a good fish-fry after our long search for a good b…

In its many incarnations, the restaurant space in the lower level of the Westbrook Apartments has been everything from a tie-and-jacket fine dining favorite to a beer-and-burger sports bar. The beautiful new Amaryllis Restaurant is somewhere deliciously in between.
The new owners, Jen Stainrook and Matt Harrington are excited to share their love of food with Buffalo. Jen attended the California Culinary Academy and got her start in West Coast restaurants where the emphasis was on using fresh ingredients from local farmers. While working at Andreis French Restaurant, one of Las Vegasi finest, Jen learned how to use u…

The Difference Between Good and Bad Flan
George Johnson
There are two things I know to be true. There's no difference between good flan and bad flan, and there is no war in Albania. --Wag The Dog by David Mamet
Thereis no war in Albania, but Mamet is wrong about flan. All flan is at best mediocre when measured against what I had last night at The Coda.
