Some say that there is no reason to reinvent the wheel when it comes to good cuisine. When Rick Naylon ran Jimmy Mac's, the restaurant was quite the hotspot. Yes, there was a big bar following back then, but people still recall how good (and consistent) the food was. Remember the Onassis salad?
As coincidence would have it, Rick Naylon was also the guy who brokered the deal for the soon-to-open Thirsty Buffalo. Restaurant partner Greg Andreozzi told me that even after the deal went through, Rick has been helping to get the Thirsty Buffalo back to the basics. He even offered to help with the menu. Add to that, one of the original Jimmy Mac's cooks is coming back to work in the kitchen. So for anyone who still misses the old Jimmy Mac's formula, you will be glad to know that the latest owners want to have a few of the old favorites on the menu.
As far as the remaining details, the Thirsty Buffalo signs are up, the flat screens are mounted, the ceiling fans are installed, and the floors …

Rainbow K, a 25-year old school formerly located at 388 Franklin Street, is scheduled to open in its new location (433 Franklin) in late September. I've been watching the ongoing progress on their home... the exterior of the building has really come alive. During the school's capital campaign, a newsletter circulated describing the inner-workings of the school - Rainbow K was established to help working families find a Montessori/Piaget based learning environment for their children. Rainbow K students (starting at 3-year olds) stay in the program until they reach the second grade level. From there they are well prepared to move on to other schools, while their parents feel confident that they have acquired the appropriate preparatory tools.
The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy run the school and secured $500,000 to purchase and complete many of the renovations required fo…

Drew Cerza, the “Wing King,” is proud to present the BeiWing Olympics. With the world’s attention focused on Beijing, China, Cerza is hosting his own world-class athletic competition which includes the competitive eating of chicken wings. This special event will take place right in Niagara Square tomorrow, August 19th, as the official kick-off to the 2008 National Buffalo Wing Festival.
Starting at 11:15 tomorrow morning, athletes who have been keeping long hours in the fridge to prepare for this event will be able to try Bobbing for Wings, a .5K Run, or the grand-daddy of them all, the Chicken Wing Eating Competition to try and bring home the gold to their living rooms. Cerza will serve up chicken wings provided from area restaurants to these willing participants who have sacrificed time and their bodies to try and return to their home couches as heroes.

With many families feeling the pinch of the economy more acutely than others, it will be difficult for a lot of them to provide their children with the basic necessities needed for school. This year will be even more arduous for families than past years that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo have held this event. However, this year, their seventh annual “2 Pack a Back Pack,” will help garner school supplies and book bags for many area children.
The drive takes place on August 27th at six different Walmart Locations. With a lofty goal of providing 4,000 youth with school supplies their year, stopping into your local Walmart and donating something to help the children will be a great boon to the organization. From now until August 27th, you can also donate scientific or graphing calculators at First Niagara Banks.
Some ideas of what supplies are needed are: backpack or messen…

If you're into tea and you're into Elmwood, then you might want to head over to Buffalo Teas a couple doors down from Mode on Utica. Last week I stopped in to talk to Brandon Datwyler, who was working behind the counter. He mentioned that the owner of Buffalo Teas, Randy Hobbs, had opened the place three weeks ago and was dedicated to providing 'everything loose leaf tea related' to customers in the village.
As I looked around at the retail selections I noticed that the products ranged from Darjeeling teas to Japanese teapots - the majority of the loose-leaf teas are black though select green and white varieties are available. Many of the tea samples can be aromatically tested in displayed 'Smell Me' bottles, which offers the customer a chance to take a whiff before making a purchase.
Buffalo Teas sells many of its bulk products online. That means that the shop can concentrat…

We found this on Futility Closet, and we were intrigued by the possibilities. What caused the apparition back in 1894? Did the atmosphere create a natural magnifying glass over the waters of Lake Erie?
The people of Buffalo, N. Y., were treated to a remarkable mirage, between ten and eleven o'clock, on the morning of August 16, 1894. It was the city of Toronto with its harbor and small island to the south of the city. Toronto is fifty-six miles from Buffalo, but the church spires could be counted with the greatest ease. The mirage took in the whole breadth of lake Ontario, Charlotte, the suburbs of Rochester, being recognized as a projection east of Toronto. A side-wheel steamer could be seen traveling in a line from Charlotte to Toronto Bay. Two dark objects were at last found to be the steamers of the New York Central pl…

Don't miss an opportunity to give thanks at the Corpus Christi Church in Buffalo during their 29th annual Dozynki Harvest Festival.
The festival will take place from August 23 to 24, and is the Polish equivalent to America’s Thanksgiving holiday, as it is meant to bring people together in a spirit of appreciation for all we have been given. "People should attend this event because it's the longest running harvest festival in Western New York and it's a chance for people to give thanks for the gifts we receive. There will also be a special mass, music, and fun," Father Anzelm stated.
The celebration kicks off on Saturday the 23rd at 11:30 AM with a farmers market and flea market. From 2 to 7 PM, pork and beef rollup dinners will be available to guests. Additionally, guests can look forward to entering a “Best Homemade Pierogi Contest” that will begin at 5:30 PM. During…

On Friday I noticed that workers were busy installing the banners on the former Blue Cross/Blue Shield building. Canisius College purchased the building with the plan to convert it into a Interdisciplinary Science Center. It's just another link in the chain that is starting to showcase Main Street as a spine of higher education. If you think about it, the spine starts with ECC downtown and ends up at University at Buffalo's South Campus. In-between we find UB's investment at the Medical Campus and ongoing Canisius College investments including he building seen here.
There are even a host of non-collegiate learning institutions that help to strengthen the Main Street spine. And can you believe that they are all interwoven by a Metro Rail system that is seeing a major spike in ridership? That's why UB should continue to inv…

Despite the fact that many people are pushing for a sole boulevard at the Outer Harbor, many of the waterside park amenities continue to appear. Features like parking and signage are making it easy for people to navigate and utilize the lakeside trail. Until now, not many Buffalonians actually knew where the Bell Slip was - or how far a jog it is to get the Seaway Slip. Unfortunately the Greenway Nature Trail map also shows exactly where the Route 5 highway is in relation to the designated trail parking. If the Route 5 plan was to suddenly disappear, the Outer Harbor would be a place where cyclists and trail hikers could easily get from destinations like Tifft Nature Preserve to Times Beach Nature Preserve. In a perfect world, the boulevard scenario (without Route 5) would already be near completion.
