Dateline: Buffalo, NY Time: sunrise, Saturday morning Weather: beautiful, little humidity and a fine breeze Mood: let's summer!
Looking at the skies this morning, I told my dog Lilly... "If Einstein were still around, he'd go sailing today." Such streams of gold and blue imbuing an August morn...robust with days yearn to stretch to an endless horizon...grab a coffee and kick in the day!
Albert Einstein liked many things, from sailing, to the strumming sounds of violin, and then certainly physics. He alluded his strong desire for sailing to the time he was a lad, referring to sailing as a way of entering a special thought stream, saying: iDreaming was central to my lifelong work, from my vision at sixteen of riding a beam of light.i And he sailed well into …

Have you heard of Art on Porches? On the first Saturday of August (August 6 this year), from 11am until 5pm, the Richardson Towers Community (Abbottsford Place and Bird, west of Richmond) becomes an artist colony. In its third year, this unique art festival has artists and musicians set up on the front porches of the neighborhood to display their work.
The event began in 2002 as a way to spotlight the neighborhood and was modeled after a similar event, Art on the Porches, in Syracuse. Melisa Holden and Uli MacDonald, Co-Directors, worked diligently to find artists to exhibit and neighbors to participate. That year, even though the weather was less than pe…

When was the last time you took a stroll down Grant Street? I walk on Grant Street quite a bit, as Guercio's Market is one of our favorite places, Lorigo's Meating Place is our favorite place for meat (well, my husband's the meat guy), and we LOVE the Northwest Library. Today, however, I went north on Grant instead of my usual south. Since it was a typical Buffalo Summer '05 day, Daisy (my 18 month old daughter) and I walked to the Grant pool (at Asa Reese Community Center) and had a blast in the sprinkler pool. We met some great kids and parents. Later in the afternoon, I decided I would do something I've been meaning to do all summer, which is go up past Bradley and get a close up look at the gardens I admire on a regular basis from my car.
Many people might recognize where I'm talking about when I mentio…

This modern salon recently opened on Main Street and caters to people living and working downtown. This is probably the only place in Buff that you can build your own salad, and then enjoy it while surfing the internet. When you first walk in to Cafe 59, there is a table that has little slips of paper that can be filled out and handed to the person behind the counter (Sarah pictured). The checklist includes the basics, and then some additional favorites like marinated zucchini, sundried tomatoes, garbanzo beans, sunflower seeds, and dried cherries. It's a great system, and a sure-fire way to appease even the pickiest customers.
This cyber cafe is also well known for serving up some tasty sandwiches. Check out the chalkboard for the specials. Once you have taken care of all the ordering, it's nice to be able to pop open your laptop and surf your favorite sites while scoping out the sce…

Chapin Parkway (Photo) This grand Green was named after Brigadier General Edward Payson Chapin. The general was a Buffalo attorney when the war broke out. However, here's the fun part- he was also a member of the city's first semi-pro baseball club, The Niagaras. During the war, Chapin got a group of his teammates together to assist with his command... as boys who play together also fight together. Unfortunately, he was killed in action in 1863 on the very day he was appointed to Brigadier General.
Bidwell Parkway is an integral element to Frederick Law Olmsted's connection system of Parkways to major green spaces. Named after Daniel Davidson Bidwell, the son of wealthy Benjamin Bidwell who was partner in th…
