Husband and wife team Sergio Neglia and Heidi Halt have a vision, and they believe Buffalo is the place to carry out this vision. In 1994 they opened the Neglia Conservatory of Ballet, a school with the objective to train, nurture and create dancers for a company. Sergio comes from Argentina and brings with him his cultural influence and extensive professional international career. Heidi is a native of Buffalo and has trained and danced ballet and modern dance professionally throughout the country. Together, the team is able to give students diverse, cultural and professional well-rounded training.
"Forty years ago Buffalo was a well-established dance capitol. Famous dancers came. I want to bring that back," says Sergio. Part of his vision is to have an international collaboration with dancers. Sergio has been performing in Japan and with his strong connections can bring global diversity to Buffalo.

Aargh! Sorry for the lack of posts this weekend... we put the eighth issue of Buffalo Rising Magazine to bed Sunday night (late). Fueled by pizza, Mountain Dew and a fez hat, the BRM staff pulled some all-nighters in order to make this our best issue to date. The mag will see the light of day later this week as it hits the local shops throughout Buffalo. Look for some cool posts coming up in the next few days as well.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until an unfortunate wedding party was stranded when their limo was denied access to Delaware Avenue. The good thing is that it didn't rain on anyone's parade...

For those of you that might have missed the start of the Karibana celebration today, there is still time to catch continuing festivities. There were live bands and djs leading the parade, which started at the corner of North and Delaware. If the parade leaves a single lasting impression, it has to be the brilliant costumes that the girls donned as they strutted down the avenue. We are working on a colorful slideshow that will be up a bit later. What a blast these revelers are having in Buffalo this weekend.

As you may have heard, there are a bunch of forward thinking folks working to develop a Garden Center on the west side of Buffalo. The group is moving forward fast with visions of a place to buy mulch, organic vegetable plants, perennials and pots within walking distance of the Elmwood Strip next spring.
This week's meeting will bring any new comers up to speed, with a report on our market survey results, and next steps in the feasibility plan, the location, and plans for membership. If you think you might be interested in volunteering or just shopping at Urban Roots next year, this would be a great time to check in. From the invitation sent out by the group:

The Massachusetts isocial soundi outfit Sunburned Hand of the Man is on the lips of audio fashionistas from New England to Northern California. The 11 member group share affinities with the No Neck Blues Band, tying together folk, classic rock, free jazz, improv and even some Krautrock to knit tight accessible packets of soul food. The Man incorporates guitar, flutes, drums, keyboards, congas, djembe, trumpet and whatever else the crowd throws on stage to meld their addictive amalgam.
"Trying to situate Magik Markers in any sort of pre-existing pantheon is pointless. Since beginning as the manic rumblings of three friends in one of their grandparentis basements some four or five years ago, the band has cut a swath across no…

Less than one year ago, the Buffalo Zoo welcomed a new baby rhino into its family. The female rhino calf was born to her proud parents, Tashi and Hank September 15, 2004. She is the first baby Indian rhinoceros ever born at the Buffalo Zoo. In fact, over the past 10 years, only nine other Indian rhino births have been recorded in North America. That makes our baby rhino very rare indeed!
The zoois baby Indian Rhino is already one year old! The only problem isOeshe needs a name. For more information regarding the contest, or to submit a name idea, visit www.nametherhino.com beginning on August 6 and running until September 9, 2005.
