Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper's Autumn Beach Sweep, a major volunteer cleanup of shoreline sites throughout Western New York, yielded tons of trash as well as some interesting items including a 1974 time capsule. The tally of trash has just been compiled from the September event. A total of 759 volunteers signed up for this year's event, more than doubling last year's total. Thirty sites along the Buffalo and Niagara rivers and smaller streams in the region were scoured. Over 7 tons of trash was collected filling approximately 1000 trash bags. University at Buffalo Architecture students joined professor Brad Wales for a walk through of the neighborhood for their next SMALL BUILT WORKS PROJECT last week. The students will work with the West Side Community Collaborativeis Greening Collaborative on architectural elements for Massachusetts Avenue and Rhode Island Street. The students joined area residents Jeff Brennan and Cynnie Gaasch on a tour of a twelve-block loop that will be the focus of the project. The group is talking planters for corners and furniture and light posts for a park on the corner of 18th Street.
