Lotus, a Philadelphia-based 5-piece ensemble, makes music that's heavily tempered by electronic styles such as deep house, drum n bass, and breakbeats, yet blends those sounds seamlessly with the organics of funk, jazz, and world beat. This creates a show that shifts from spiritual and meditative, to jubilant and energetic, from dance-floor burners to spaced out waves of electronica. Since its inception in 1999 this band has grown into a worldwide touring powerhouse. Changing every…

You've got to hand it to Neo on Allen. They tend to capitalize on the fact that Buffalo (especially Allentown) is an artsy city. And what could be a more artsy gift than this crazy manipulative notepad. You can twist it into a number of different shapes, and by doing so, the image contorts as the notepad maneuvers. It's whimsical and fun... and yes, it is useful as well. The Picasso Morph Notepads are perfect for anyone that is in need of a quick scratch-pad, or anyone tha…

I stopped in to Globe Market today to see what new type of cheese Lisa had on hand. It turns out that Dustin, Globe's retail manager was holding down the fort for Lisa, and he had the perfect selection on hand to show me. One of Globe's best sellers is the Clawson creamy white Stilton with mango and ginger. Wow! The suggestion sounded a bit out there, but this was coming highly recommended. So Dustin slices off about five samples for me to taste. It was just then that I realized…

Best known for his work with funk-metal heroes Mr Bungle, as well as its conceptual art-rock off-shoot Fantomas (which combined sci-fi sounds, cartoon music and monster metal riffs), bassist Trevor Dunn leads a dual life on downtown New York's avant music scene, where he has played with the likes of John Zorn, Susie Ibarra, Marc Ribot, Terry Rilely and Gerry Hemingway. While his own acclaimed Trio Convulsant combines jazz and power chords, Dunn veer…

An offshoot of the Guerilla Gardeners, the Ninja Tag Removal Team (NTRT) is planning its first attack on graffiti tags in the city. The team will be targeting hi-profile tags and will also be discussing ways to deter these taggers from destroying both city and public property in the future. The team is not targeting all forms of graffiti, rather they are combating the senseless tagging marks that are often found on street signs, bus shelters, brick buildings, vacant storefronts and any other highly visible objects in the city. The team will also be meeting with a variety of organizations throughout the Buffalo to discuss issues like increased penalties for those taggers that are caught and enforcing those penalties that usually come in the form of work hours dedicat…

Another hidden gem within the walls of the Buffalo Museum of Science, the Science Museum Camera Club has been an affiliate of the museum since 1939 . . . over 65 years! The club consists of 40 to 50 mostly amateur photographers with a few who do some professional photography on the side. The group meets twice a month at the museum, October through May. On the first Tuesday of each month the club holds print and slide competitions adjudicated by an outs…
