And, as their website states, "Just Buffalo remains steadfastly committed to both." Curious about this weekend's upcoming Family Fair and Book Sale, I decided to call Laurie Dean Torrell at Just Buffalo Literary Center to see if I could find out more. The sale started as two tables of books outside the office door about 6 months ago. After a slow month or two, word spread. It wasnit much later that the table expanded, and books were finding new homes left and right.

Offering lightly used books, at only $1 per paperback and $3 for those with a …

A 'Not-So-Private' Gallery

Collecting original art is so trendy that the action itself has become an art form. Years ago it would not have been unheard of to find an original work at a garage sale or a flea market. These days you just have to find the smaller galleries that start up for the 'right reasons'. The right reasons? Well, I'll get to that …

If there is one thing we all must constantly buy, it's food. It's not the sort of items we can put off buying for any extended period of timeounless you're one of those unambitious types who never cooks.

Because of this, the availability of food has a profound effect on urban living. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that the vibrancy of an urban neighborhood is directly affected by the grocery options within one's neighborhood.

One of the most effective generators of sidewalk foot traffic is a good sized, (but not too big!) urban friendly grocery store. They come in many shapes and sizesothe corner deli, the bodega, the greengrocer/produce mart, the small supermarket. Then there are specialty stores like bakeries, butcher shops, and…

A picture-taking blimp isn't the only thing going up at Uniland's proposed Gates Circle condo project. So are the prices, substantially. When officially announced in July, Uniland was quoting prices starting at $300,000 to $1 million+ for penthouses. The unapproved project has just had a price adjustment. According to

The intersection of Brayton, W. Utica and Rhode Island is seeing a fairly drastic change take place to its predominant dwelling. Owners have already completed much of the interior work to the corner house and have moved onto the structure's exterior. One of the most interesting attributes of the dwelling is the great cupola found on t…

Bill Zimmermann and I took some time to venture down to Buffalo's waterfront earlier today. We set out in search of the marble remains of St Joseph's New Cathedral, which was demolished in 1976. The cathedral had been built in 1917 and was located at 1013 Delaware Avenue (corner of…

The successful renovation of 414 Delaware Avenue into a highly acclaimed boutique hotel known as The Mansion is well known in Buffalo. It has been so successful that perhaps people have forgotten the depths to which this beauty had sunken.

The house started out as the grand residence for the Charles F Sternberg family. It w…

In recent posts there has been much said about the debate over the merits of having Uniland's proposed high-rise condo on Gates Circle. Some parties in opposition to the project have cited concerns over the ramifications of building a tall tower on a historic circle and Olmsted parkway.

Whether or not this is actually a ruse for blind self interest (people afraid of their views being blocked), or a genuine contextual land-use concern, I think such a project is more relevant to the major street it will be onoDelaware Avenue.

Are modern high-rises appropriate? You betcha! It's all in the history of this Avenue, which I'll briefly examine here.
