West Side Neighborhood Walk Saturday

RaChaCha

Saturday Morning, November 15, Partners for a Livable Western New York will be doing a walk of the area of Niagara Street in the City of Buffalo of the “Upper West Side by the River” neighborhood from Forest Avenue to Fargo Avenue. This walk will be done in collaboration with representatives from the Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council, including Executive Director Hal Morse and Holly Maietta, and Greg Szewczyk of the New York State Department of Transportation.

One of the goals of the walking team will be to suggest ideas to give the neighborhood an “identity”. Barbara Rowe, a business owner in the neighborhood, is organizing neighborhood participation. The walk will begin with a neighborhood discussion at 8:30AM in Santasiero’s Restaurant at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Niagara Street. After the walk will be a report of…

MY GOD!

STEEL

So, I was tooling around BRO today and clicked on an ad. I must admit I rarely click on internet ads but one caught my eye for some reason. I clicked http://greenleaf-realestate.com/linwood-900.php and this wondrous vision came to my attention. This fabulous Linwood Avenue 2 bedroom apartment is going for just $900 -HEAT INCLUDED! It is very rare treat to see inside Buffalo's great buildings and private spaces (and I wish I had higher resolution pictures of this one). As I noted in my recent "Growing Up City" piece, one can be quite astonished by these Buffalo interiors. This building is a great example of what I was talking about. If this is the building I think it is this gorgeous interior is an amazing contrast to its dark heavy…

Upping the ante on Rhode Island

Upping the ante on Rhode Island

There's nothing like following a project that moves forward one moment, then slows up the next, before finally moving in a different direction. That's what's been happening with Scott Washburn and John Crawford's 476 Rhode Island Street property - remember the brick building that we featured in this post? After the story was written, some of the key financial components began to change and it looked as if the purchase was not going to take place. It was heartbreaking to watch, but eventually the two decided to take the plunge and purchase the property. At the same time, they also decided to snag the adjacent lot, as well as another vacant house a couple of doors down.

The intention is now to fix up the abandoned house so that they have a place to live near their larger investment. Once the brick stru…

In a matter of minutes it will be Friday... the day that will most likely bring on the signing of a check for just under four million dollars. With the signing, Buffalo will lose out on an an opportunity to retain an incredible museum that has been waiting in the wings for many, many year. When the transaction takes place, it will not only be a loss for Buffalo and Western New York, it will also be a huge loss for New York State and the entire US of A. Why? Because the collection is irreplaceable. It is the world's largest collection of American-made bicycle and I believe that we will look back upon this day and regret the lack of action taken to keep the collection in The States where it belongs.

This week we brought Phil Haberstro in from the Wellness Institute to talk about the what the loss will mean to us. Many people had hoped that the museum (currently located in Orchard …

Farewell Old Friend

Dan Fisher

The Aud will be gone soon. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take a piece of it home with you. Don’t miss the opportunity to own a piece of Buffalo history at the Final Salute Weekend, set to take place at the Buffalo Convention Center.

At this weekend’s party entitled “Farewell Old Friend,” the classic blue seats will be available for direct purchase. That means no bidding wars or auction anxiety for you to worry about. But there are only 600 available, so get there early.

And it isn’t just a sale; it’s a celebration with former Buffalo sports greats. You’ll get to hang out with Sabres alumni, including the French Connection, Danny Gare, Matt Barnaby, Rob Ray, Larry Playfair, Floyd Smith and more. Erie County Citizen's Budget Review Commission

Elena Cala Buscarino

This past Monday night marked the first meeting of the Erie County Legislature Citizen's Budget Review Commission. Not much more than a meet and greet, Legislator Tim Kennedy gave a quick introduction to go along with a huge stack of budget booklets before excusing himself from the meeting.

"The expectation of the commission is to learn the budget," Kennedy said. He said that he didn't expect the appointed members of the commission "to have input in the $1.5 billion budget submission, which has to be passed on December 2nd of this year," but that they would participate over the course of the next year. This will be County Executive Chris Collins' first budget submission.

Before he left, he assured those present that they wouldn't be expected to know everything in the booklet before the next meeting on December 11th. "The budget is having its own difficulties this year," Kenn…

Dub Trio Rocks Nietzche's

buffalorising

There are a lot of interesting bands that play at Nietzsche’s, but not many have a background like Dub Trio. Dub Trio tours all over the world and was even on Late Night With Conan O’Brian last year. Their main shtick is the dub technique, but with flavors of reggae, metal, hip-hop, and punk blended in for a smooth sound that is genre bending and full of force. What makes this band unique is that they’ve toured with Gogol Bordello, Clutch, and Helmet, but they’ve also done session music for 50 Cent, Mos Def, Common, the Fugees, Tupac, and Matisyahu. Their talent is nearly unmatched and their technical dub and bass grooves get matched with amazing guitar riffs for an original, intense sound.

The band consists of drummer Joe Tomino, bassist Stu Brooks, and guitarist D.P. Holmes. These three seasoned pros have just released their latest album “Another Sound Is Dying.” I…

Help! Restoration Contractor Needed

Letter to BRO

Most everyone has had the 'restore an old home dream' at some point. One frequent Buffalo Rising reader writes, “I’m thinking of purchasing an older home that is going to need a gut rehab, but don’t have the skills to do much of the work myself. Can you put out a call for help? I need to find a capable contractor that has taken this on. And what I can expect to pay per sq.ft. to restore an old home at a ‘moderate’ level of finish?”

Any recommendations or experiences?
