Seasonal Parking Restrictions Started This Weekend

buffalorising

Well, no parking some of the time, but you'd better pay attention to the signs.

Friday, Mayor Byron W. Brown announced the implementation of a seasonal parking restriction for specified streets in the City of Buffalo. The parking restriction will began Saturday, November 15, and will continue nightly through April 1.

“The City of Buffalo enforces this restriction to guarantee that snowplows will have ample room to clear streets of excess snow and ice,” said Leonard Sciolino, Director of Parking. “This is especially important for streets that see high traffic or are included in bus routes.”

The parking restriction will be in effect from 1:30AM to 7AM, nightly until Wednesday, April 1. Signage is posted in all restricted parking zones, and violators will be ticketed if parked illegally.

Turning Obesity Inside Out

buffalorising

The Research Center for Stroke & Heart Disease of the Jacobs Neurological Institute and the Theatre of Youth are no strangers to innovative programs. From 2005-2007 they ran “Agent S.A.M.” which went to schools and taught children and adults about strokes, their warnings signs, and prevention. Now, with the University at Buffalo, they are rolling out the red carpet for “Inside Out,” a program dedicated to fighting childhood obesity.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 30 percent of American children are overweight or obese. That is a staggering and scary statistic. The statistics behind their heart problems, like that obese children as young as 10 years old have the arteries of 45 year olds, are absolutely horrifying. This issue has entered the public’s attention in recent years and though there are programs to fight obesity, the Theat…

The Times on Buffalo: “Home to Some of the Greatest American Architecture”

Ed Healy

Buffalo’s amazing collection of 19th and 20th Century architecture is featured on the cover of today’s edition of The New York Times Arts & Leisure section in an article aptly titled “Saving Buffalo’s Untold Beauty”. The article dominates the front page of the Arts & Leisure section with a breathtaking photo of the Ellicott Square Building as seen through one of the oval windows of the Guaranty Building’s 13th floor. The subhead makes the case for Buffalo right up front: “The Home to Some of the Greatest American Architecture Tries to Balance the Past With the Future.”

The article is highlighted by seven (!) beautiful photos spread over nearly three entire pages and is supplemented online by an audio slide s…

Buffalo Featured in New York Times

BlueDevil

The New York Times, which periodically remembers there is life in New York state outside the NYC metropolitan area, has a lengthy piece about Buffalo and its architectural treasures in today's edition. The author, Nicolai Ouroussoff, hits on all the usual Buffalo landmarks including the Richardson Complex, the Darwin Martin House, the former Larkin Office building, and the Olmsted parks.

In referencing new projects including the visitor's center at the Darwin Martin House and the Burchfield-Penney Museum, the author closes with some interesting commentary:

But how these projects will be forged into a cohesive vision for the city’s future is less certain. The best-intentioned preservationists, however determined, can acc…

Maureen's Buffalo Wholesale Florist

Elena Cala Buscarino

Ah, the smell of it. That's a first thought when one walks into Maureen's Wholesale Florist, a pleasure of sight and aroma in the heart of the city. Recently celebrating its 10th year on Ellicott Street in Downtown Buffalo, Maureen's is growing strong.

"I've worked here in the floral district for 27 years," owner Maureen Bartley said. She explained that a hundred years ago, the area she is in was a wholesale district, with the floral suppliers predominantly on Oak Street.

Bartley opened shop 10 years ago when the floral supplies distributor she worked for closed. "The man who bought six of these buildings at auction was a New Jersey developer who I'd known for 20 years because he was a florist supplier," Bartley said. "He told me I should start a flower shop and I said, 'Oh, sure.'" Then her landlord put a cooler in what Maureen described as "just a big cement building,"…

buffalorising

On the eve of the historic sale of seats from Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that the City of Buffalo is donating a set of “blue” seats to the Buffalo Historical Society, to become part of the general collection to preserve this important part of Buffalo history.

Hundreds of original sets of blue seats will be available for direct purchase at Farewell, Old Friend…The Final Salute to Memorial Auditorium at the Buffalo Convention Center.

“I wanted to ensure that a piece of Buffalo’s beloved ‘Aud’ would be on display for everyone to see,” said Mayor Brown. “I have always emphasized the need for community involvement in the final farewell to the Aud that properly pays tribute to the history and the impact that this remarkable sports venue had on generations o…

Green Jobs Conference With Sam Hoyt

Eli George

I grew up in a small community about an hour outside of Buffalo. Maybe you’ve heard about it. It did make the front page of the Buffalo News a few weeks ago (for probably the first time ever). My hometown Sheldon is suddenly a much different place than what I remember. I was driving to my parents’ house one weekend, crested a hill, and my eyes were shocked to see nearly twenty windmills on the horizon. Like it or not, green jobs are coming to WNY – even in places where there are more cows than people (that’s really a statistic of Wyoming County – something the people who live there take particular pride in repeating).

There have been efforts to talk about green jobs. Organizations have seemingly sprouted up out of nowhere attempting to foster the idea of growing the WNY economy through the environmental movement. After all, no matter what you do, being move env…

Do Your Holiday Shopping With Roswell

Eli George

While you’re doing your holiday shopping, you’ll no doubt be bombarded with requests for donations to help the needy this holiday season. When you come right down to it, it’s a difficult decision on whether to donate, who to donate to, and how much – there are just so many factors that need to be considered. Roswell Park Cancer Institute is making that decision a lot easier. Though they’ll accept donations, they’ve created a way for you to donate and do your regular holiday shopping through their program, The Paint Box Project.

You know you’re going to need holiday gift wrap, cards, ornaments, gift baskets, and other seasonal items. Instead of going to a major store, you can order it from The Paint Box Project. Their 2008 Holiday Card & Gift Collection benefits cancer research and is created by those currently fighting …
