James Harris played only three of his 12 seasons in Buffalo. But he managed to make a little history in his time with the Bills, becoming the first black man in the history of the National or American football leagues ever to open a season as the starting quarterback.
Known throughout his playing and post-football careers as "Shack," His story is told in "Third and a Mile: The Trials and Triumphs of the Black Quarterback," a new book by William C. Rhoden of the New York Times. ESPN.com excerpted the book, which presents the experiences of Harris, Warren Moon, Doug Williams and others in oral history form, as part of its Black History Month series.
Drafted in the eighth round of the 1969 draft - seven rounds after a running back from Southern California named O.J. Simpson - the rookie had to be talked into migrating north from Louisiana by his coach at Grambling, Eddie Robinson.

While attending last night’s Sabres game, I noticed a few good positives that have not been existent over the past month. There was some physical play being exerted on the opposing team as well as an excellent balance of special teams. Not only did the power play come through at the most opportune time, but Buffalo did a stellar job at killing off the majority of Ottawa’s man up situations.
The Sabres dug themselves a deep hole to open up the third period with two quick penalties giving the Senators a two man advantage. It looked like Buffalo was going to come out unscathed until Peter Schaefer tied the score at 2 with only 17 seconds remaining on the PP. The entire HSBC Arena took a collective breath and knew that it was going to be yet another battle to be won or lost in the third period. This time was going to be different though as Buffalo refused to give in to a team wh…

What slump?
After a dismal-by-their-new-standards January, the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 win against Ottawa on Tuesday further demonstrated that it's not yet time to start worrying, much less making plans for panic.
Even as Buffalo wound up its worst month since before the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season, the hockey cognoscenti still placed the Sabres among the cream of the elite in their weekly power rankings.
In the first such rankings of February, three of the five online hierarchies surveyed put Buffalo at No. 2, trailing only the Nashville Predators, with the Sabres coming in at third and fourth in the other two.
(The fact that a franchise called the Nashville Predators tops any National Hockey League list, except maybe "Most Nebulous Nickname" or "Logo Least Able to Close It's Mouth," says quite a bit about why…

Even 13 years after the last time the Buffalo Bills played in the last football game of the season, the Super Bowl presents a bittersweet proposition.
Sweet, because it recalls nearly half a decade when the home team needed just 60 minutes of excellence, or even competence, to earn the city’s first-ever world championship in a major professional sport.
Bitter, because, well, you would have thought they could have done it even just once.
The late-January (now early-February, thanks to the ever-elongating National Football League schedule) nostalgia was stronger when you’d see Don Beebe running around in a Green Bay Packers uniform, or Cornelius Bennett roaming in the black duds of the Atlanta Falcons.
You don’t see such bizarre sights any more, since the Bills who played in Super Bowls XXV through XXVIII have all retired to careers in the fields of coaching, business, br…

Listening to the post game press conference by J.P. Losman sounded much different than the one he did at the end of last year. He was upbeat, excited and even asked for one last question. J.P. simply didn't want the season to end and he is already looking forward to next year.
Going into Baltimore nobody gave the Bills much chance to do anything against the highflying Ravens. With our up and down offense and their number one defense it was projected to be a big win for the Ravens. However the Bills hung in there, and gave a great team a tough test before they go into the playoffs. Just like we did with the Patriots, Chargers and Colts our team played tough and kept it close for a majority of the game.

OK, maybe you have not had a chance to get over to Buff State for a Silverbacks game. Maybe you're looking for some incentive? How 'bout a YouTube hi-lights video to get you going?
The Buffalo Silverbacks defeated the Quebec City Kebekwa Saturday night at Buffalo State College Arena, 110-98. This is Buffalo,Aeos 7th win in their last 8 home games and perpetuates the momentum they,Aeove gained by evening their record at 7-7. After kicking off the season with a 4 game losing streak, Buffalo is on the comeback trail and leveraging their assets on the floor better than ever bef…

There's no playoff berth at stake for Buffalo on Sunday in Baltimore, but that doesn't make the Bills-Ravens game meaningless.
For one thing, it will be only the second time in six games a Buffalo game is televised in the Buffalo market, with the kickoff time moved back to 4:15 p.m.
For Baltimore, a win means grabbing the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs. For the Bills, it's a simple matter of pride.
Buffalo has already won two more games than a year ago. Upsetting a 12-3 team to finish at .500 would stamp Marv Levy's first season as general manager as an unquestionable success, particularly given the non-existent expe…

The Buffalo Silverbacks take on the Cape Cod Frenzy Friday and the Quebec City Kebekwa Saturday at Buffalo State College Arena. During the Frenzy's last two visits to Buffalo they were handed losses that they're probably still recovering from. After the first encounter, Buffalo walked away with a 136-90 victory and Antoine Sims set the franchise record for Buffalo scoring 52 points. The next meeting was in a bid to move to the second round of the ABA (American Basketball Association) playoffs. The final score was 133-88 which propelled Buffalo to the next round. You can be sure that the Frenzy will be back looking for revenge.
The Quebec team is new to the league this year, but with a 7-3 record we're sure to have a Basketball "Battle Roya…

This was the first game I was able to attend first hand and even though we didn't win, I was proud of the team that I saw take the field on Christmas Eve. There was an outside shot that if we won and others lost we could have squeaked into the playoffs. Although it wasn't meant to happen, our team continued to lay the foundation for next year.
There were many standouts on our team today. J.P. had another monster game with the exception of the last play of the game. I don't think anyone in the stadium, let alone J.P. had any idea that Coach Jauron would opt to go for it on 4th down rather than kick a field goal. That's what I think ultimately lead to such a chaotic play. Rian Lindell was a perfect 5 for 5 on the day, and I think it was a big…
