Harvey Garrett Ousted From WSNHS Board

buffalorising

How could this happen? In this Artvoice story, Geoff Kelly nicely outlines a series of events that ended up with community activist/advocate Harvey Garrett being voted off of the board of the West Side Neighborhood Housing Service.

Garrett has proven himself to be a friend of the community through his work with the West Side Community Collaborative (WSCC) among many other endeavors. Whenever there's a community problem on the West Side and elsewhere Harvey is ready to lend a hand, and his efforts show.

Garrett contends that the WSNHS, along with voting to change their name to the Greater Buffalo NHS has done a poor job of putting money to the West Side, while they sit on $1.3 million, with potential for more. In a letter to other board members and interested parties that Garrett shared with us, he acquiesced that putting some of that money on the Ne…

The critically acclaimed Japanese experimental trio, Boris, will be performing this coming Monday at Soundlab. Recently ending their tour opening for Nine Inch Nails, Boris will be sharing the stage of a more personal venue with Boston’s Clouds.

Boris, an act that has spanned over a decade, found it’s footing with an American audience when their genre-bending album “Pink”, released in the States in 2006 by Southern Lord became an immediate appeal to critics and fans alike topping SPIN, Blender, and Pitchfork as one of the best albums of the year. Borrowing flavors from such classics as Motorhead, Blue Cheer, and 90’s stoner rock sensations Sleep and Kyuss, Boris crafts a heavy sound spun by E-bows, generating an unsettling amount of distortion and plenty of droning feedback. The psychedelic sound of Boris has found appeal to wide range of music listeners as every albu…

Dayle Lynn Pomerantz is a recent author having just published two books this year, one in August and one in October. Now WNYers will have the opportunity to get her signature before she becomes the next big thing at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Pomerantz, who lives in Orchard Park, has written two books that teach parents and grandparents what they could be doing differently to have a better relationship with their children and grandchildren.

The book on parenting focuses on discovery and observation while teaching parents how to discover what it takes to create a happy and strong family. The book about being a grandparent is much the same, but it is based on Pomerantz’s interviews with grandparents and includes a set of a dozen “how-to’s” to show grandparents how to be the best grandparents possible. Both books showcase the importance of family ties and how to be good…

There was one local Kohl's store unmobbed by stampeding bargain seekers yesterday. Instead, it was full of construction workers. Benderson Development was trying to get the new Kohl's store at 2232 Delaware Avenue open before the holiday shopping season. But with final approvals this summer, the aggressive schedule was not feasible. The 88,000 sq.ft. store is expected to debut in April.

Sabres V Pens Game 22

Anthony Swinnich

The Sabres skated way with 2 points Friday night after defeating the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins, despite playing Lindy Ruff's system for only one period. Luckily, it was the period that counted the most.

Things were wide open for the first 2 periods, looking more like a game from the Briere and Drury era than one of the defense-first contests the coaching staff has been trying to get going this season. Shockingly, the score stayed relatively low, despite the presence of the league's leading scorer, Evgeni Malkin, and his partner-in-crime, Sidney Crosby. To be fair, they both had a productive night. Both of Crosby's goals were assisted by Malkin. It's just that the rest of their usually high-powered team couldn't seem to get it going.

It was obvious that the Sabres were starting to fall behind in the speed department toward the end of the second period. They took three pen…

The latest art exhibition at ArtSpace, “Complex Compost,” reflects and encourages a growing local interest in reuse and renewal. From the abstract to the absurd, there is something for everyone at this show. “Complex Compost” features the artworks of four emerging local artists, each using found objects as a medium to translate the material language of our surroundings. By placing discarded objects into innovative, unfamiliar contexts, each artist interprets the boundary between trash and treasure and its place in our daily environment.

The strength of the exhibition lies in the diversity of materials and mediums used to comment on a common theme. In all of the artworks, objects once rejected become celebrated, examined and reassigned into new meanings. Each artist contributes their individual vision and technique to the show, providing a wide range of id…

When I first hear that the Turkey Trot attracted over 10,000 runners, I was simply amazed. Seeing the front page photo in the Buffalo News today confirmed that the race was a visual delight for both runners and spectators. Yeah, I know that this is a popular race for Buffalonians, but it's more than that. This race attracts what some might say is a cult following. It's a race that draws families and friends together. People rally behind the race and rally behind Buffalo at the same time. It's like a big reunion... a reunion with people and a reunion with the city. From BRO's Thomas Tarapacki:

"The Turkey Trot is more than a race - it’s a massive Thanksgiving celebration, bringing together thousands of family, friends, and co-workers for an enjoyable workout prior to Thanksgiving dinner. Whether you…

The season demands we take time to give thanks. So, in the spirit of the holiday, we want to run down the list of perennial Buffalo-area underachievers who should be the most thankful this year.

1.) Ryan Miller - The Sabres goalie signed a five year, $6.25M per year contract over the summer. This lucrative contract extension came despite the fact that his stats over the past few years have been very middle-of-the-road. Has the money made him a better goalie? Well, he's currently ranked 19th in save percentage and 17th in goals against average. At least he didn't let the money change him.

2.) Dick Jauron - After joining the Bills with a mediocre record as a head coach, Jauron has shocked almost no one by continuing his mediocre record with consecutive 7-9 sea…

If you're looking for something to do while shopping and dining this evening, Lafayette Presbyterian Church is hosting an inspirational tree lighting ceremony (7pm) to kick off the holiday season. The church is located in the heart of the Elwood Village (corner of Elmwood and Lafayette), so stroll on over and experience some tranquility before heading out to do whatever it is you are planning. There will be song led by members of the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church and hot chocolate offered by the church’s Boy Scout Troop - all to warm the soul.

This is a big night around the village... be sure to check out Black Friday in the Museum District, or the Elmwood Avenue Carriage Rides (start tonight and continues each Friday in December - 7 pm to 10 pm). Or if you're really in the mood to shop, and Buy Nothing Day is passing you by, then take a time-out and grab some 'peace of…

Have you seen the new '08-'09 Buffalo and Niagara Artist and Gallery Guide yet? This free publication has been around since 2001, and if you're into the local art scene it has become an essential resource. Each year I pick it up and discover obscure studios right in my own neighborhood. The guide showcases larger well-known galleries that many of us are aware of, but at the same time it opens our eyes as to the numerous hidden artist studios around the city.

The book is split up into two sections (2D Studios, 3D Studios) making it easy to navigate. With over 175 artists, galleries and museums featured (that's a lot more than they had back in '01), the resource grows more important each year. And if people pick it up and use it the way it is intended to be used, the artists will benefit as much as the community will. When Buffalo was down and out, it was the art scene that held …
