South Buffalo Irish Feis Saturday!

Gabrielle Bouliane

If Buffalo ever creates a new position for The Popes of South Buffalo, the men of Jackdaw will certainly be the first to be elected. And while we all know Buffalo has its abundance of summer festivals (like, you know, every weekend, if you want to get a final taste of "meat on a stick", this is the place. Besides which, having followed Jackdaw ever since I've returned to Buffalo, there is NO other place to see them that is as massively and devotedly attended as the South Buffalo Irish Feis.

Last year, I was standing on stage working a video camera, and had to deal with the entire stage moving like the deck of a ship, with 3000 audience members pounding on it during the show. This year, a total of ten bands will play throughout the day, including local favorites Terry Sullivan and John Lombardo, as well as …

The Artistic Side Of Black Rock

queenseyes

Spending a day on Amherst Street can be full of artistic surprises. Like walking down a side street in the neighborhood (between Grant and Elmwood) and discovering a wonderful lighthouse. My friend Sue and I went to Nick's Place for lunch today and she all of a sudden shared, "Have you ever seen the lighthouse?" I had no idea what she was talking…

You Gotta Look Sharp

queenseyes

Last weekend BRO's Joan Fedyszyn had the opportunity to ask Mayor Byron Brown a very important question. No, it was not about the waterfront, or taxes, etc. It was actually more along the lines of, "Where do you shop for your suits?" Being an Elmwood Avenue guy for so long I suspected what his answer was going to be... at least I knew where m…

Most of us jazz lovers know about the Sunday jazz series at the Albright Knox and many of us have been in attendance the past two Sundays, but how many of us were aware that also for the past two Sundays, starting at 5 PM, the Masten Jazz Festival was held on the lawn next to the Buffalo Museum of Science? In addition, this past Saturday, the…

Mauro Means Art!

andalu13

I was intrigued when I saw some media coverage of the Guitars for Hope campaign that is aimed to benefit: Hunters Hope, Kelly for Kids, and WNED. I cruise to work the next day & discover that some of the guitars are being displayed in our atrium (no such thing as coincidence). I think to myself- time for a much over-do BR article; what a fun way to learn more about this public art project and at the same time meet a contributing artist. One of the guitars immediately caught my attention so I contacted the creator and set up an interview. When I sat down with Tony Mauro Sr. I was all set to cover the public project, the genesis of his creation and some of his other Buffalo endeavors. What morphed instead is pretty special.

A Fond Farewell To Lightmakers

queenseyes

It was with great sadness that I am relaying this store closing to you. Lightmakers on Elmwood Avenue will be closing its retail location at the end of July. Being a big fan of lighting, I am very sad to hear this. Being friends with the owners, Roy and Sionen, this was really upsetting. I have been frequenting Lightmakers ever since they opened on the avenue seven years ago. Roy an Sionen brought an upscale design standard to Buffalo through their beautiful lighting elements. Many of the city's trendy restaurants have been outfitted with lighting accessories from Lightmakers, and it is du…
