George Johnson

Robert Creeley was of the best and influential poets of our era. He was a comrade and muse for Beat Generation writers like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, though his style was very unlike theirsan extreme economy of words and emotional understatement.

He became a member of the English Faculty at the University of Buffalo in 1967. In 1978 he was named David Gray Professor of Poetry and Letters and later the Samuel P. Capen Professor of Poetry and the Humanitie…

Mother's Day 101

Read this if you are a man who shares residence with the mother of his children. Read this if you are a mother. Read this if you have a mother. Everyone else can get on with their day.

As a mother of three for over eight years now, I consider myself an "expert" on Mother's Days - both forgettable and memorable. I'm proud that my husband has been trying (and succeeding) really hard since that catastrophic Sunday in May 2003. Most importantly, he is teaching our boys how to pamper a lady. And for that I am truly grateful and blessed.

Because men and women speak two different languages, especially when it comes to expectations around holidays, here are some SIMPLE things you can do to make sure the day goes smoothly.…

Buffalo Booksellers

If you are a bibliophile like me you probably already know these Buffalo used and rare booksellers who, in this age of internet price warfare, dare to keep a brick and mortar shop alive. I've spent a lot of time in their shops, as there are few things in life I enjoy more than browsing through the stacks until something jumps out at me. Sometimes it is a cherished book I had forgotten (just a few weeks ago stumbled across a copy of "The Secret: A Treasure Hunt" that I hadn't thought about for 20 years). Other times, and far more frequently, it is a book I didn't know I needed or wanted. Last week, at Second Reader, I found a book entitled "Kooks", a collection of essays and documents by and about people with, ahem, odd view of l…

Babik "Birthday" Celebration

For the past year, local Gypsy Jazz Band BABIK has been performing every Wednesday night at Allen Street Hardware Cafe. (A little too late for most folks on a "school night".) But to celebrate their One Year Anniversary of playing at Hardware, Babik will perform a special evening show there on Sunday, April 30 from 7-11pm. This is a great opportunity for those early-to-bed folks who've been missing out to experience some Gypsy Jazz, and still get home at a reasonable hour on a school night.

Sunday, April 30th, Anniversary Party from 7-11pm at Allen Street Hardware Cafe, 245 Allen Street @ College, for what is shaping up to be a very special event. The …

That's what the crew from Off The Wire calls the dancing figure outside their new shop at 472 Elmwood Avenue, next to Louie's Hot Dogs. An authorized Nextel representative, they carry everything from your basic cell phone to the trendy, ultra-thin "Razor" and add in free accessories like ear p…

I Like The Way Jenny Scrubs

George Johnson

Bay Area mashup artist DJ Earworm here in "I Like The Way Jenny Scrubs" mashes up "Jenny from the Block" by Jennifer Lopez, "No Scrubs" by TLC, "Get Ur Freak On" by Missy Elliot, and "I Like the Way You Move" by the Bodyrockers.

Pretty damn cool.
