James Joyce Birthday Celebration @ Gusto at the Gallery, 2/2

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, in collaboration with the Humanities Institute of the University at Buffalo and riverrun inc., is presenting a james Joyce Birthday Celebration as a part of Gusto at the Gallery this Friday, 2/2/07. Joyce, the internationally celebrated irish novelist and poet, would have been 125 years old. All types of Irish culture will be present, from dance to song to film to theater, as well as panel discussions and lectures on the significance of Joyce's work. The full schedule follows.
5 – 7 PM: Art Activity: Masking Meaning
5 PM: Performance: Rince Na Tiarna Irish Dancers
5:30 PM: Performance: James Joyce the Singer
Selections from Moore’s Irish Melodies, performed by Baritone James Alexander Hurd and Soprano Kelly Meg Brennan.
6 PM: Performance: Irish Classical Theatre Company
Actor Vincent O’Neill will perform excerpts from the play Joyicity.
6:30 PM: Film: Following James Joyce … Dublin to Buffalo.

7 - 10 PM: Nickel City Poetry Slam
Generously supported by the New York State Council on the Arts and Just Buffalo Literary Center.
Featured poet Dasha Kelly joins the second season of the Nickel City Poetry Slam Series, hosted by Gabrielle Bouliane and Just Buffalo Literary Center. Kelly is an eloquent and accomplished writer who unfolds the spoken word into a variety of precision tools as a performer, lecturer, and instructor. She has performed throughout the nation, and has opened concerts for comedians Tommy Davidson and Damon Williams, and neo-soul artist Angie Stone. Registration will begin at 7 p.m.

8 PM: Lecture: 'Parnell! Parnell! He is Dead': Joyce, Parnellism, and the Ethics of Remembrance
With Professor Anne Fogarty, Chair of Joyce Studies at University College Dublin, and President of the International James Joyce Foundation.
8:35 PM: Panel Discussion
Patrick Martin will moderate a discussion with guest speaker Anne Fogarty, UB English Professor Mark Shechner, and Buffalo State College English Professor Laurence Shine.
9 PM: Performance: James Joyce the Singer
