Buffalo International Film Festival Represented at Sundance 2007

BIFF.jpgIn some good news for local filmmakers and film lovers, Buffalo is joining the ranks of cities with their own International Film Festival. Even better, Danielle DiGiacomo, documentary committee chairperson for the Buffalo International Film Festival (BIFF), is currently on hand at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, to talk with interested parties about the impending inaugural festival and its competitions to be held in Buffalo, New York.

DiGiacomo is heading up BIFF’s documentary competition titled Cities Rising From the Ashes. The competition will award the best short- and feature-length documentary dealing with constructive solutions to urban problems. Submission rules and guidelines will be announced soon at www.withoutabox.com.

Buffalo International Film Festival was founded as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation on January 21, 2005. The organization is planning a major international film festival in and for the benefit of the diverse Western New York and international film communities. The festival will include film and video competitions, screenings, educational events and appearances by industry professionals and personalities.

I think Buffalo should get out of the way on this one and support the Rochester Film Festival which has been going on for years and already rates as one of the top Film Festivals in the country. The cities are too close in proximity for each one to have it's own film festival and Rochester has a big leg up with the Eastman House and Kodak. It's just a much better idea for Rochester than it is for Buffalo. Buffalo neds to come up with something original for once.

Oh, Sally, you need some strong coffee. The Rochester Film Festival is hardly major. There is more film making going on in Buffalo than in Rochester, and more important, people want a festival here. Does it really offend you that people are creative and taking initiative in Buffalo? Do you know what is going on in theater, bookmaking, film, video, classical music, new music in Buffalo?

It is almost frightening to imagine a full-blown festival here (such an aggressivee undertaking requiring an awful amount of financial, admin, and volunteer support) -- would have been much better to start out small (in profile and in category). And why such a narrow focus for the doc divsion? I hope the administrators of this festival squash my fears and put on a monster of a festival. One sincere suggestion: consider redesigning your poster -- something less elementary and a little more edgy. This one looks like the world might expect buffalo to look.... Good luck!

Yes Rochester's film festival is so huge that nobody has ever heard of it. Besides what does that film festival have to do with coming up with one of our own. Oh and I'm sure Rochester wasn't the first city with a film festival so I don't think they were being "original" when they started theirs.
