Dr. Catherine Fisher Collins Booksigning @ Barnes & Noble, 12/12

fisher_collinspost.jpgThis Tuesday, Dr. Catherine Fisher Collins will be signing copies of her new book, "African-American Women's Health and Social Issues" at Barnes & Noble Books on the Buffalo State College Campus from 12:30-1:30PM.

The second edition of her book, published in July 2006, addresses social as well as health care issues faced by women in the African-American community. Written by a team of experts that includes doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and chemists, this handbook focuses on the diseases that pose the greatest threat to African American women today. Two thirds of the chapters are completely new with fresh topics and information, and the remaining chapters have been thoroughly updated. Topics include heart disease, sickle cell, breast cancer, diabetes, HIV and AIDS, as well as mental illness. Social issues that affect health are also examined, including poverty, homelessness, stress, racism, sexism, and treatment disparities. At a time when more women than ever are single parents and/or working mothers when families can already be at great risk, understanding both the external and internal forces that affect health is the first step toward ensuring long-term well-being. Dr. Collins' book takes a long and thoughful look at a population that has unique stresses and needs, and gives women the tools to begin taking better care of themselves.

Barnes & Noble, Buffalo State Campus, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY 878-5509.

With a plethora of degrees and certificaes earned entirely in the Western New York area, and a lengthy resume in the fields of health care administration and education, Dr. Collins' background and history with the issues facing African-American women is impeccable. She is the recipient of over 40 awards from including SUNY Best Faculty Fellow and awards related to community service and health from the governors of New York, Kentucky and New Jersey; and awards from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Organization of Women, and various regional community service groups.

"I was not only entertained reading this wonderful book, I learned a great deal. What a feast! The topics were carefully selected for the most impact, the writing is scholarly but entertaining and overall, full of good information that will motivate everyone who reads it to change their lifestyle. It certainly changed mine.... This is a must read."
