What might appear to be a mere short distance relocation to the casual observer, is paying off big time for a longstanding Hertel Avenue deli. Marco’s Italian Deli opted to transition from its original Hertel digs to the former Subway spot a couple of blocks away.
From the sounds of it, the increase in business has been dramatic… actually booming according to an employee, since opening one month ago. The new location positions Marco’s on a high profile corner, directly across the street from Lloyd Taco. The worker that I ran into behind the counter this morning told me that the move was precipitated by Joe Dash purchasing the building where they had been in business for 18 years. Deli owners felt that it would be proactive to jump on the closed Subway location quickly.
As for the new Marco’s location, other than the increase in customers, businesses is as usual. They are still making some of the best NYC style deli “sangwiches” in the area. They are also selling meat (specializing in Boar’s Head) and cheese by the pound. With gourmet sandwiches named after the likes of ‘Sammy the Bull’ and ‘Nicki Whispers’, and notorious Buffalo locations such as ‘Foot of Ferry’, this place is likely to mobbed all the time. There’s even a poster of Al Pacino (from The Godfather) on the wall.
Along with subs and sandwiches, Marco’s also sells hamburgers, paninis, soups and salads, and there’s a kid’s menu.
I’m amazed that the restaurant was the same place where Subway once operated. Gone are the drop ceilings. The place is clean and bright, and there’s even a patio out front. It’s amazing what a little budge will do for a business sometimes.
Marco’s recently opened a second urban location in Buffalo at the Genesee Gateway building (see here).
