There’s nothing better than seeing a fleet of cycling families out on the road. Thanks to the efforts of Kidical Mass Buffalo organizers, the sight is fairly common these days. Each year, families embark upon a collective bike ride, in an effort to show the kids the rules of the road, the best routes to take, and bike safety. The rides also aim to get the youngsters cycling early on, to teach them to spend time in a healthy outdoor setting.
The next Kidical Mass Buffalo is scheduled to take place on Sunday May 15, 2106 (meet at 10am). The group ride starts at the Delaware Park Rose Garden. From there, cyclists head throughout streets in the Elmwood Village and the Upper West Side. Along the way, the families take a break to fuel up at an Elmwood pit stop, and then eventually make their way back to the Delaware Park playground (near the Rose Garden).
This ride is an easy breezy jaunt for cyclists of all ages, and no one gets left behind. The ride is a great way to meet other families that enjoy cycling. Altogether, participants travel for three and a half miles. Kids that know how to cycle and have some street smarts are welcome to ride their own bikes. Smaller tykes are welcome to join the fun, as long as they ride along in bike seats, trailers, cargo bikes, and so forth.
This informal ride is essentially very grassroots in nature. Parents supervise their own kids, and are responsible for their safety. Kids under the age of 13 are required to wear helmets by law.
In the end, the ride is all about having fun, getting to know the city streets, and enjoying time well spent with family and friends.
