It’s almost time to break out the board shorts and bikinis, Buffalo! The Madd Tiki Winter Luau, presented by Buffalo Rising, is returning to RiverWorks.on Saturday February 6. New for this year is a 2nd floor format, with an elevated band stage on the upper level, and a dueling DJ stage, with improved acoustics for numerous heavy hitting local music acts.
“In anticipation of spring, what better way to ‘shake it off’ than to recreate some island flavor in the city I love?” says festival collaborator and tattoo guru Mark Madden. “The luau at RiverWorks highlights the juxtaposition of winter, with vibrant tropical sounds and sights – it brings Buffalo dancers, musicians and artists together to drink, eat and celebrate as ‘Ohana’, which means ‘family’. This year’s event is all ages, because we want to share some fun in the sun with everyone.”
This year’s luau features bikini and board short Twister games, corn hole, big wave surfing on the giant LED screen, life size Genga, body painting, live art demonstrations, ice carving, traditional POI dance and go-go dancers, LED hula hoopers, fire spinners, and shaved ice treats. Guests wearing bikini and board short attire will automatically be registered for prizes. Bring a beach chair and plant it under a palm tree!
Buffalo’s storied street artists will be creating works of art during the event. Temporary tattoos will again be provided by Madd Tat2, along with an exhibition of some of their work to those contemplating some body art. Tropical-themed photo-op vignettes will be placed throughout, to help create some tubular surf memories of the evening’s unique atmosphere. This year’s volcano will be bigger and better than ever.
The party kicks off at 4:00 PM with DJ’s Sully and Igloo. Igloo’s JP Freedom pushes a strong patriotic theme with his 100% all-American mixes. Things start to heat up when DJ Rinse 716 and the NY Jungle Giants storm the the stage at 6:00 PM with their legendary sounds. The beach band Freshwater Four comes on at 7:00 PM as the first live band of the evening.
The Abotts bring their signature sounds to the stage from 8:00 – 9:00, followed by the band SubSoil at 9:00 PM. DJ LoPro takes control at 10:00 PM, and the show is closed out by dubstep specialists Big Basha and The Verdict who take over the stage at 11:00 PM. To glam things up a notch, the Foxy Diamondz will be making cameo appearances onstage throughout the evening.
Artists include: Chuck Tingley, Vinnie Alejandro, Sean Madden, Kelly Kresconko, Ashley Kay, Chris Main and Justin Wells.
Polynesian-themed food and drinks provided by Pearl Street Grill & Brewery. There will be a coat check available.
