When Sugar City initially sent out a call to artists to submit proposals to occupy the DIY collective during the month of February, they had no idea that three different artists would be selected. Not just that, all three artists have a bent for fiber and alternative materials. That means that the show will have a “common thread”, where the artists will all be working with a shared medium.
“Fiber arts has long been consider more of a craft or folk art often attributed to the feminine. These three artists utilized this material in a creative way to document the passing of time, resulting in a new understanding of old traditions.” – Sugar City
The following artists will all be featured throughout the month-long show:
Another Lopez is foremost a dancer/performance artist and uses remnants of old costumes and other fabrics to create her work. Her technique involves layers of fabric, glitter, and thick layers of paint as a way to preserve the various documents of her performances.
Megan Luongo is a textile and fiber designer who utilizes dyeing and weaving to produce large and small scale wall hangings and unique garments.
Lindsay Tripp (lead image) is a photographer, collagist and zine maker that recently finished the series “Care Cycle,” a series that utilizes transparent fabric to create “Magic Houses” that are documented through multiple exposure photography.
