Award Winner: The Best Planned City: Olmsted, Vaux, and the Buffalo Park System

Most of us are already aware that Buffalo was the first city to be designed with an interconnecting parks and parkway system, designed by Olmsted and Vaux.

These days, Buffalo is hard at work, attempting to preserve and restore the integrity of its Olmsted Parks. The monumental effort can only be realized by examining the history of parks.

The following video, from the Library of American Landscape History, has been given a national award by the Society of Architectural Historians. The award winning video does an excellent job at telling the story of Buffalo and its intertwining Park System.

2015 Award Winner – April 16, 2015

Sometimes the authors at Buffalo Rising work on collaborative efforts in order to cover various events and stories. These posts can not be attributed to one single author, as it is a combined effort. Often times a formation of a post gets started by one writer and passed along to one or more writers before completion. At times there are author attributions at the end of one of these posts. Other times, “Buffalo Rising” is simply offered up as the creator of the article. In either case, the writing is original to Buffalo Rising.

Enjoyed the video.  I wonder if the fences on Three Sisters Islands were erected after the video was made.  I know it’s a litigious society we live in, but are those fences really necessary?

I hear there is a small 1 acre section out in the northwest where the sun actually never shines and that there are many, many people there forever sequestered!
