The CrossFit craze has made its way to the city, giving area residents one more neighborhood fitness option, now that CrossFit Nickel City opened its doors last weekend.
The 2700 sq. foot facility at 247 Virginia Street was completely renovated to feature full locker rooms with showers, turf and rubber flooring, and massage and physical therapy rooms. In addition to CrossFit classes the facility will also provide physical therapy, chiropractic care, yoga classes, massage therapy as well as seminars on nutrition, kettle balls and weightlifting.
Owned by husband and wife team Chris Heeb ad Karen Maker, as well as Chris Nentarz of Impact Sports Performance, the renovations to the space began in early 2014. The proximity of Nickel City CrossFit to downtown, Allentown, the 190 and the Elmwood Village makes it easily accessible for more than just the neighborhood.
Owner Chris Nentraz brings over 14 years of athlete training to the facility. He has worked with athletes of all sorts, including those from the NFL, MLS, NBA, MLB amount many others. Sounds impressive to me. Nentraz specializes in movement science and sports orthopedic rehabilitation, which ensures all athletes are trained to get the maximum workout they can in a safe way.
For those who aren’t familiar with CrossFit the program focuses on strength and conditioning using a variety of different exercise methods. It can include barbells, gymnastic rings, jump ropes, medicine balls and resistance cords, and has made quite an impression on fitness junkies worldwide since its founding in 2000.
I’m very excited there will be one more fitness option closer to the downtown area. Sometimes it can get frustrating finding a place to work out because many of the area gyms are clustered in North Buffalo. If you use public transportation, walk or ride your bike to commute, it can be a huge pain to have to bus it to North Buffalo. So this additional option for West Side neighborhoods gives city dwellers an excellent choice for crossfit training and daily workouts.
