Cornerstone on Allen

Cornerstone-Allen-Buffalo-NYThe former NY Pizza location on Allen Street is getting a serious makeover. Not only will a new business be opening up inside, the owner of the building is removing the cheesy facade to bring back the original look of the building. That means that there will be plenty of glass and brick, which will make this corner shine once again. The building owner is also going to be partners in the new business, called Cornerstone on Allen.

The plan is to be part pizzeria and part bakery, selling pizzas and breads of all sorts. This will no longer be the late night drunken go-to… instead it will be more upscale, in tune with the advancements taking place at the Medical Campus. The owner’s son is bringing in a friend to run the pizzeria – a guy who has been operating a popular pizzeria in St. Bonaventure, NY for the last ten years. The baker who will be running the baking operation is yet to be announced, but from what I have heard it sounds promising.

This is excellent news for this corner location in Allentown. The street is primed for a bakery, and if the pizza is as good as they say it will be, then we’re looking at a welcome upgrade in pizza joints… and more than anything else, this building will be a draw in itself, rather than a 70s-looking mash-up of design influences.

    Awesome news.
I heard that a new pizza place is going in the old Sweet Tooth location on Allen and Elmwood.  Anyone hear anything about this?

  • Informedone

Exciting news for a rather prominent locale!!!

  • brownteeth

I must say I’m a little upset that I won’t be able to see all the wonderful remodeling the previous NY Pizza owner did any longer.  I must say they did some stellar carpentry work in there with materials I didn’t even know you could use in such applications…

This is GREAT news, though I’ll miss my late night pizza when I visit Buffalo. I’m curious about the roads and sidewalks in areas like Allentown. What does it take to have new paving and sidewalks? Does the city maintain them on a regular schedule or do they need a full redesign for the neighborhoods before they act?

  • millz88

I heard a rumor that NY Pizza is moving across from the Old Pink.

    • mmmmBuffalo

millz88 That was supposed to be another pizza place, and they’d been doing work on the building for months but have now stopped and the building is for sale.

  • NewBuffalo

They did have great pizza, but I’m happy to see more ‘upscale’ establishments coming to Allen St.

  • elmdog

really cool upgrade…how about getting the canadian who owns the building next to Cantina loco to make some upgrades….He seems to be a jack a**

  • is ny pizza closed?  i think they were one of the oldest businesses on allen.  they deserve props for sticking it out.

  • oh, and are there any rendering of the new storefront design?

  • greenca

The facade thankfully being removed was not only cheesy, but absolutely hideous.  Restoring the facade will be a huge improvement for Allen St.

Has anyone heard any news with respect to the alleycat tavern near allen and elmwood that looks like it is poised to open?  It looked like it was going to open months ago.

  • OL MFM

This is the worst news I’ve ever heard.

  • The Polish Prince

I used to go here after a night of boozing on Allen.  I’m saddened and disheartened by this news.  Where am I going to go now and get delicious meat pies that cause a sting ring the next day?

  • tthday4nite

Is St. Bomaventure, NY a clever way of saying Olean?

    • pampiniform

tthday4nite It is part of Olean.  The university has its St Bonaventure, NY as its mailing address.  It’s kind of like Notre Dame in that regard.

  • DMZ

Bad and good news I guess.  I’m going to miss that pizza, but that place was in need of a makeover.

  • TreborNeroht

Thank god. worst pizza in the city! and good riddance to all the drug traffic coming out of the kitchen. No judgment towards recreational users but for the addicts that i saw, it was a negative impact.

  • TominBuff

I hope they are going to get rid of those Keebler Elf bay windows and put in large windows that are more fitting to the building and more historically accurate.

    • nashcp

TominBuff Roger that Houston, the owner is doing just that!

  • NBuffGuy

I used to LOVE that pizza.

  • Buffalogal

I hope S&G’s taco pizza makes a return….also it would be nice if it could be open late night on weekends.
