Lindy Ruff Fired

Lindy Ruff Fired
After 5,692 days as head coach, the Buffalo Sabres have fired Lindy Ruff.

The Sabres announced the news on Twitter.

The Sabres have made no announcement as to who the next head coach will be.

Ruff was the longest-tenured coach in the National Hockey League and the second longest-tenured coach in professional sports.

He became head coach of the Sabres in 1997.

Ruff's career record as Sabres head coach was 571-432-78 and earned 56% of possible points.

In the postseason, Ruff's Sabres were 57-44.

He took the Sabres to one Stanley Cup championship, losing to the Dallas Stars in 6 games.

Lindy has been the head coach of the Sabres longer than I have been a hockey fan. While his dismissal is long overdue, it's also a sad day for the Buffalo sports fan. Lindy was drafted by the Sabres, and spent 26 years with the Sabres organization. Lindy Ruff is a good hockey coach, and, while a change was long overdue, the Sabres fan should have nothing but good wishes, love, and respect for Lindy Ruff going forward.

Now it's Darcy's turn

Long overdue. Darcy needs to go now.

Announcing it via twitter is so low class. I got it, they didn't tell him via twitter, but it's classless nevertheless.

I agree, they should have used Grindr instead

They've got a five o'clock press conference scheduled, the team, I believe, left for Toronto. News may have gotten out that Ruff wasn't with them. I wouldn't read too much into it being announced via twitter...unless at five they announce Regier is gone as well.

Seems reasonable on Pegula's part. They signed players, paid the max, and it didn't improve. Luke Adam washing out, Myers struggles, there are enough signs that it was time for a change.

My son and I got to be in the press conference following the Boston game... he's an impressive guy. Hope he does well some where else.

Waving McCormick after the fight the other night...kind of mixed signal to the team? The next coach won't be so in love with Hecht and some of the other long timers.

Classy guy, good coach, should have no problem landing another job.His tenure here was long over due. Best of Luck Lindy.

I respectfully disagree that Ruff is a classy guy. The last few years he constantly called out players in the press, sometimes directly, other times passive aggressively. I may be wrong, but that's not the way successful professional sports coaches conduct themselves. That, and with Ruff, it's always someone else's fault for why the Sabres lost games or underachieved. The players certainly deserve blame, but there's plenty of examples of coaches being the problem (see Pittsburgh or LA).

I'm no Derek Roy fan, but his parting shots at Ruff were spot on. So were Brad Boyes' comments after he left the team.

Derek Roy and Brad Boyes...really?.....Derek, albeit talented, is a selfish me first, phony...and Boyes is a soft, underachieving turd....I wouldn't put any stock in what Derek Roy or Brad Boyes has to to say about any coach.....I think Lindy is a good coach that should have been axed long ago, just don't use these two chumps to sell your point

Good move... Does anyone else get the Jimmy Jones vibe from Pegula? bring in over priced players and micromanaging the hockey team

Better than the Tom Golisano vibe: bring in scrubs and don't care if they lose.

BTW, JJ won three SB's, two at our expense. I'd like a "Jimmy Jones vibe" that results in that from the Bills and Sabres . . .

You could not be more wrong to compare Jones to Pegula Buffplanner. Pegula has always stayed out of the spotlight and when he has spoke up he was nothing but genuine, sincere and humble.

I think you mean Jerry Jones...and No, Pegula is not nothing like Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones is owner, president, and GM of the Cowboys. Pegula hired Ted Black as President and has Darcy Regier as GM. Pegula has trusted (maybe to a fault) his employees to make the decisions for his team. Jones has his obnoxious face all over the media. Pegula is hardly in the media at all. If anything, Pegula is the anti-Jerry Jones. I am not sure how your could even say that Pegula is remotely like Jerry Jones.

Buffplanner, it's Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson was his headcoach.
I don't think Pegula is micromanaging, I think he's just a new owner and there's a learning curve here. Rolston may end up being more than an interim coach.

Is Ted Nolan available?

Although available in the sense of not now employed in the NHL, Nolan is head coach of Latvia's national team which just qualified for the 2014 Olympics.

Not sure, but I'd think staying there for that is better than taking an NHL job, and I doubt he could do both at once.

Also, Ted & Darcy working together just won't happen - so there'd have to first be a GM change here.

But if results are bad for the Sabres between now and 2014, then who knows?
A new GM plus Nolan as coach for 2014-15 season?
Far fetched, but crazy things do happen sometimes, like Darcy+Lindy both lasting here for over 16 years, two separate stints of Larry Quinn of all people, and 4 different team owners.

From our best years Regier lost Drury, Briere and Campbell and resigned Conolly, Stafford and Hecht.

Yes, but only to Dominik Hasek's wife.

Had to happen now. The players seemed to be forcing the issue through their effort level.

I'd have preferred to see Darcy replaced long ago, then let a new GM decide about Lindy. But even that way would've probably resulted in a new coach by now. Shelf life with any one team for even good coaches is only a few years usually. I won't be surprised if Lindy is hired somewhere else before the end of the season - if he wants to start again that soon.

The problem is who's still here. Unless this event somehow causes Darcy to really change (become much more aggressive with trades, and better at deciding who to sign and trade for), similar results are likely again as soon as novelty of a new coach wears off with these players.

He looked like a beaten man the last couple of weeks. It's really too bad the team quit on him. Because those players tarnished his image and legacy. This happens to coaches with 3 or 5 years with a team. You don't pull this crap on a coach with over 15 years with a team. Let's see if their game suddenly changes.

I'll say this about this so called team, what they did on the ice this shortened season is disgusting. None of us are in the locker room so we don't know what goes down on a daily basis but these men are very well paid professionals and they not only screwed Ruff but they screwed the fans. They disrespected the people that pay good money to see this team. If they had a problem with Ruff they should have gone to Pegula. Instead, they decided to speak on the ice by tanking games. Their actions may cost this team a playoff spot. The fans should take a flame thrower to that locker room. They don't deserve that luxury.

When they come on the ice for the next home game they should be loudly booed. They should play Beethoven's Opus 131 or Mozart's Requiem Mass.

I wish Lindy Ruff well. I think he did lose this team, but it's weird to think of seeing someone else behind his bench tonight.

Darcy Reiger is the real problem and he knows it, so he let his coach go to prove he's "got what it takes" as GM. His roster speaks for itself. The coach is gone, but I think the product will remain largely the same.
